View Full Version : I just got a letter from Ofcom about Charley's paedophile comment!

Heyas! I dont know if you care or not. But I and a few other people complained about Charley at the time she made the comment towards Gerry about sleeping with 15 year old boys. I'm not going to read the whole letter out, but they say that this is the eighth series and we should expect this type of behaviour. They say that the comment was unacceptable, but there wasn't actually anything illegal involved. If Gerry wants to persue it, he can, but we can't.

Just thought I would let you all know! Did anyone else get a letter?!

A good sensible response from Ofcom for a change. we cannot have free speech damaged any more than it is by the over sensitive lets stop this or that brigade.

If anything said is illegal then there are existing laws to deal with it when the show is over. At all costs broadcasters must not be censored in what they can broadcast. People are on that show at their own risk and say what they say at their own risk. Viewers to timid to take on the chin offensive happenings should switch off....The program is not for the faint hearted.

BB is a realty show with real people and unscripted. There will always be the occosional OTT remarks....That's the nature of the show that't the joy of the show. that's what free speech is about....Long let it continue...

They reply to all first time complaints in some cases, they reply to all complaints. Depends on the complaint.

Even though I like Charley, calling someone a paedophile is low.

Not that Gerry is any better of course, he calls women slags.

I'm not really into the whole "complaining culture" we seem to live in. If it's something serious and worth complaining about then that's different.

I didn't hear her say it so I can't actually answer that. But then again all her trash-talking merged into one big noise for me.

Then dont watch it. Its bad enough that people who dont like the show complain, and then we have fans of the show complaining too. Do you want BB to run longer than this series?

If you dislike Charley then thats your personal choice. No need to complain to Ofcom about it. I fail to understand how Charley calling Gerry a pedophile can offend someone to the extent that they complain!?

Find something more interesting to do :)

Lol. I nearly fell over laughing when the letter came! I didn't think they would take me seriously. It was my first complaint, and the only reason I did complain as I saw a thread which was asking people to complain and stuff, and I was like "Why not?". lol. I wasn't deeply offended by it. lol.

So you complained for the sake of complaining? That's sad.

As much as Charley implying Gerry was a paedophile was wrong, the only person really to take offence from this comment is Gerry himself. I don't see how another impartial person could take offence from this unless you believed Charley and thought he was a paedophile.

Well if I wish to complain, I can. I didn't just complain about it for the sake of it. I could of complained about other things if I just wanted to complain about something. I thought her comment was unacceptable and I thought I would see what Ofcom thought. =)

Jack
12-08-2007, 12:28 AM
But what good will complaining do unless you actually want to see Big Brother taken off the air? If everyone felt like you and had nothing better to do than they would have got 5 million complaints and you coul kiss the show goodbye.

Noel
12-08-2007, 12:30 AM
I don't want it taken off air. One complaint about one incident won't get the show taken off air. Why are you being so serious about it? It's not the end of the world.

My point was if everyone just felt like complaining then they would get millions of complaints then it would have been taken off the air.

I don't agree with people complaining about Big Brother, sometimes situations like that happen and if you don't want to hear it, then it's simple, don't watch it!
It's expected of Charley to do something like that. She's out now. Horray! So instead of complaining, vote a housemate out that you don't like by voting for them to be evicted.

Noel

Noel

Okay, then sorry for complaining then. I thought at the time, that it was necessary. I used my instinct, and if people have a problem with that, then I am very sorry.

Have you got a link to the argument where she says paedo?

By the way I'm not being funny, I just can't find it on youtube.

He said he liked younger men, but didn't say 15 year olds. And she said 15 year olds. She was in rage and it just came out.

I said previously that I dislike this culture of complaining about every little thing. I also said at the time that it was a personal comment that should Gerry wish to pursue he would be able to but not something "we" would get anything done about. Ofcom are busy enough without having to go through complaint after complaint about every little thing that comes out of a HMs mouth

If he wishes to complain, let him. It's a world which we live in that allows free will. Ofcom is used for people to complain about things that they've seen on tv which they have found uncomftable viewing or something that shouldn't have been shown.

If he wanted to complain then that's fine, don't have a go at him, and don't call him sad. What Charley said isn't a thing that should be encouraged and if you dont take action then nothing will happen to stop it.

Exactly! I think calling someone 'sad' is pretty low tbh. I didn't complain but some of the stuff that went on should have be recongnised. The show won't get taken off just because of that complaint, and even if it did get taken off it would be for a reason that the show was awful, not because he complained

Everyone has their own opinion of the way charley spouted out to Gerry that he liked 15 year old boys. I for one found that disgusting. She then pretended she didn't know the age consent....yeah right!
A link was posted to CH4 and Ofcom if we wanted to air our views on her comment, which some of us did.
What's the big deal with making a complaint, people have complained through all the BB series's.....To say Ch4 might have taken the show off air is dramatising!!And to insinuate that it's ''sad'' to complain or the people that complained is ''sad'' is insulting.
Gerry may be branded something he is not all because some vile human being is ignorant.
