Channel 4 director of programmes Julian Bellamy just announced that there will be no Celebrity Big Brother on the main channel in 2008.

A process of "creative renewal" was cited; close to 30 hours of 9pm slots will be freed up as a result. Kevin Lygo, director of television and content, also cited a desire to "rest" the series due to a feeling of it having "never left our screens" in the wake of the Shilpa race row.

An experimental version of Big Brother will air in January - solely on E4, and a decision as to whether CBB will return in 2009 will be made next year.

I had a feeling something like this would happen. I'm not really that bothered. "An experimental version of Big Brother" sounds interesting - maybe a sign that they are finally going to change the format of the show.

BB All Stars anyone?

I'm sure an All-Stars version would be on C4 - it's probably something not too dissimilar to Teen Big Brother, which was awful.

And so we finally reach the beginning of the end

Sounds like BB All Stars may be well and truly happening. Or maybe another sort of teen version. There's not many other things I could think of which could be 'experimental'.

Yeah, it was definately confirmed, wasn't it? But I suppose there's been a change of plans.

I'm with you on that one CathalOS, I mean, Paris has supposed to have been offered a bundle of cash to appear in Celebrity Big Brother 6 and now courtesy of Dig.spy, they say that it will be 2009 until the next show, maybe??? Oh dear....? Haven't we heard all this before? More spin from the rumour merchants. I would wait a while on this report and let us hope that it is not true.

I would say personally, that the idea of a January Celebrity Big Brother is not the case and instead of that, there will be this E4 show, but beyond that, maybe a late-in-the-year Celebrity Big Brother? That sounds more plausable. It is a shame for Big Brother fans, as we have just been given some sad news and I was looking forward to talking about the next Celebrity Big Brother, as I love them, even though they are pretty short in comparison, which I don't really mind, as Big Brother 8 this year has been quite a drag for most of us and things just went wrong.

Anyway, I am sure that the show will go on in some shape or form, and if we have to put up with this E4 thing, then so-be-it?

CBB was never exactly confirmed. After CBB5 one of the boffins up at C4 said "I don't see why we shouldn't bring it back" which kind of led people onto believe it would 100% be coming back. Paris Hilton was only ever in talks according to The Sun - and it was more then likely a stunt to get more people interested in the show, I mean we hardly ever get rumors that early.

I have been telling people for weeks now not to hold their breath as NOTHING was ever set in stone.

Its a good move by Channel 4 - no two ways about it. They know they need to give the show a bit of a rest to make it feel fresh again - and now we have an experiment to look foward to - not a list of rubbish 'celebritys'.

No Celebrity Big Brother next year

Robin Parker - 11:00am

Celebrity Big Brother will not return next year following the race row and as part of a shake-up of Channel 4's 9pm weeknight slot that will also see a cull of several factual entertainment shows.

C4 has axed You Are What You Eat, Brat Camp, It's Me Or The Dog and Selling Homes Abroad as part of the shake-up of the schedule to make way for new shows.

Already confirmed for the slot in January is a fly-on-the-wall documentary series from Firefly with the working title The Family in an echo of Paul Watson's iconic 1970s series. A family will have cameras installed throughout their home to document every aspect of their lives.

C4 has also extended Cutting Edge's run in the slot from 16 this year, split into two eight-part runs, to at least 20 and up to 30.

In a tacit admission of how the media storm over Jade Goody's behaviour in this year's Celebrity Big Brother overshadowed the regular version, head of C4 Julian Bellamy said he wanted to create "more anticipation" for the show's non- celebrity ninth season, due next summer.

"After the race row, it was constantly in the press and part of the national conversation at a time when traditionally it was off our screens - it feels like it has never been away this year," he said.

C4 has now aired five seasons of the celebrity version, the most recent of which ran for three weeks. It previously skipped a year between Big Brother seasons four and five.

The channel will decide next year whether the celebrity version will return in 2009 or beyond.

"Resting Celebrity Big Brother will benefit the format in the longer term as it will have a bit of breathing space," Bellamy said.

He denied, however, that celebrities had been put off the show after this year's fracas. "People have been predicting that celebrities wouldn't want to go in the house after Les Dennis' experience in season two, but that's not been the case."

Bellamy admitted: "There is, however, a general issue of supply and demand and it's getting harder to book celebrities."

He said that ending some of C4's factual entertainment shows would lead a "creative renewal" of the channel.

"C4 should be constantly restless and that means clearing some space to try new things," he said.

They say the same thing to everyone. I'm sure they get requests in for All Stars BB everyday, It doesn't mean they would ever really do it. It doesn't matter what we want, its all down to the boffins at C4.

From The Sun

CHANNEL 4 have sensationally suspended the next series of Celebrity Big Brother.

The last series was overshadowed by the race row about the treatment of Bollywood beauty Shilpa Shetty by Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O’Meara

Channel 4 said the decision is part of a “creative renewal” scheme.

The broadcaster claimed the move is part of a policy to clear almost all returning series from the heart of its peak time schedule in the first half of 2008 as it strives for new and adventurous programming.

This year’s non-celebrity Big Brother has failed to make the usual headlines – though the ratings have stayed strong.

It is expected that Celebrity Big Brother will return in 2009.

In BB terms there not great, but overall BB is one of the most watched programs in it's time slot. Its just viewers are more spread around now and it's not like they have all swayed to BBC or ITV.

You can't really compare it to Big Brother 2005. Although Big Brother 2005 had a 4.4m average, it still had about 20-22% of the viewers per episode which is much more important than the number (about the same with BB7). This year it's only 15%.

It's a great move on Channel 4 and BB's part. The format is in need of a good rest and by the time next May comes around people will be wanting some Big Brother goodness.

It also gives time for the producers to put some proper effort in, hopefully change the rules. I'm hoping that's what the experimental BB will be, a way to test new rules, perhaps making it more into a competition, where the winners of tasks get to nominate, the housemates decide who is evicted and also everyone is allowed to discuss nominations, that way it encourages more game play and strategies. If this is a success then adapt some of these rules into the new BB9 series.

They should have classical big Brother 1:

12 Housemates, Four Weeks

Bubble
Charley
Seany
Eugene
Nikki
Glyn
Imogen...

Each week the housemates nominate their least favourite classic housemate, then the ones with the most votes get put up to the public vote e.g (Anthony v.s Makosi) If Anthony got chosen, the housemates would do a test to see who is most like Anthony, then that housemate is evicted. Also, the housemates dont know whos getting voted.

Just read a comment from Angela Jain (or whatever she's called) that said "The experimental Big Brother will be SPECIFICALLY tailored for E4".

God I really hope they aren't going for the "Skins" audience, I don't want another Teen Big Brother, it's already been done. I want them to use the BBUSA rules or at least something like that, with a bit more thought put into it.

By the way what email address it best to send suggestions to for Big Brother? I know they are unlikely to take everything on board, but I think if enough people emailed they'd take things into consideration. As BBBM has proved this year, they definitely read the forums from time to time.

Jack

I have a feeling it will be very similar to BBUS which will be great. When watching BBUS, It feels very similar to Beauty and the Geek, Shipwrecked etc in terms of production. These are E4 reality shows and I think this may be what is meant by "specifically tailored for E4".

Also I can't see there being a public vote via telephone and text with it being on E4 therefore possibly supporting the theory of it being BBUS style.

I hope you're right. I want it to be an experiment with the rules, not different housemates. I really can't see what to get out of another Teen BB.
