I'm surprised there hasnt been more talk about Pop Idol 2.
I'm sooooooo excited!! Maybe it can make up for Big Brother for me, as I didnt enjoy it as much as I thought it would.
I absoulutely loved Pop Idol last year, it came close after BB2! I cant wait for it to start. All the same judges, presenters and format.
I'll be staying in Saturday night to watch all of this!

Who else is excited?:colour::colour::colour:

I'm a bit sceptical as to whether it can be as good as the last one ... I did love watching it though, but mainly once it had got past the awful auditions!

I thought the same about Big Brother 1 and as to whether BB2 would be as good but look how amazing it was!! A lot of sequels I find are better than the first time around.:spin2:

Well what did you think?
I thought that there wasnt as many got through but some you dont show so that might be it.
I laughed at that girl who was a bingo caller:hugesmile:

The best bits are when it gets to the live part and the Kate Thornton does the after show that kciks ass.

The bingo caller was funny and how she got through to the next round was crazy. I thought the girl with the music box and the one singing Promise Me were funny too but for the wrong reasons. And the one witht he music box was adament to try another song after being dismissed by Cowell who was having none of it, and repeatedly told her 'No!'. Oh he was harsh in his criticism all night, and I loved every minute.

I thought Pop Idol was a combination of embarrasing and funny.

I saw a bit of it last night. The girl with the music box was hilarious.

I've read that they have to go through two auditions before they even get to see Simon Cowell and co.
Which means they send the so-bad-they're-good ones through to make the show more entertaining.

Tonight was ok cos Nicola was on Gareth Sister and she got through.
And these sisters were on and they were arguring with the judges
And Scott and Nicola from last time were on

I've been watching this because there was nothing else on and I have to admit much my :blush:that I actually like this programme it's a right laugh. Simon Cowell sending people packing who think there it, is a laugh. That girl from Scotland was funny last week, and those two sisters who had to get drunk to sing in front of the judges and being chucked out was funny. I feel sorry for the second chances though to be told your worse than last time is well bad. Felt sorry for that girl who was in tears. Being told she was was only good enough for Butlins. Nothing wrong with Butlins though.:dazzler::dazzler::dance: I love it.

Every one was obsessed last year and I thought the board would be buzzing??:conf::conf::conf:

Well I like it. More than Fame academy at the moment.

Although I think Pop Idol is quite stage managed and set up, it doesn't take itself as seriously as FA and the lack of highlights on BBC1 and live Internet coverage means that I haven't got into the BBC's show yet.

I've got a feeling though I'll like Pop Idol less when the serious competition starts.

Fame Academy is OK, but I'm not really into it - as I have said before I don't get interactive and without that it is quite poor.

I watched a bit of the Pop Idol show when it was repeated last night on ITV2. Like LEE, I think I will enjoy it more when it gets into the top 10 though. I never watched Pop Idol until the show with the Christmas songs and then I got hooked.

I am slowly getting into Fame Academy, I just watched CBBC at the Fame Academy on CBBC which was quite entertaining. I enjoy wathching the singing lessons on interactive, but sadly don't get much chance for that now!

Although I love it when they get down to the final 10, part of the joy of Pop Idol is seeing the auditions and the truly awful noise that emits from some peoples mouths.

I did think it was bad that Gareth's sister got through just because of who she was. She was either good enough or she wasnt. Anyway I gather she didnt get much further. It seems that those who tried again this year had a much harder time of it. If someone last year was good enough to get into the last 50 how come this year Nicola was basically told she was rubbish.

As for Fame Academy I quite enjoy the digital coverage, but the actual 'singing nights' are so fixed its unbelievable and I dont like the fact that the teachers can pick their favourites.

Looks like Pop Idol is going to out-gun Fame Academy in the ratings.

From Media Guardian yesterday:

Pop Idol trounces Fame Academy

Monday August 18, 2003

Pop Idol: pulled in 7.4m viewers

The BBC's decision to schedule Fame Academy against Pop Idol backfired on Saturday when 7.4 million viewers tuned in to the ITV1 show, 50% more than watched the BBC1 programme.

ITV bosses, who were furious when the BBC opted to move its reality talent show to Saturday nights, will be claiming victory today after the weekend's convincing ratings victory.

Although Pop Idol's debut episode last weekend also beat Fame Academy, Saturday's victory was far more convincing.

ITV's ratings peaked at 7.4 million on Saturday night as reality fans switched over from the first showing of Fame Academy to watch Pop Idol at 7.15pm.

The ITV show averaged 6.8 million, nearly 2 million viewers up on last week, and took a 40% share against the National Lottery Live on BBC1, with just 3.8 million.

In contrast Fame Academy peaked at just 4.8 million, barely more than one in four viewers, as people failed to switch back to BBC1 after Pop Idol ended.

ITV1 held on to its early evening lead, with 5.9 million viewers watching game show The Vault. This left BBC1 crime drama Jonathan Creek trailing by 2 million in the ratings.

The Vault was followed by Matthew Kelly's presenting comeback, a celebrity Stars in their Eyes special, which pulled in 6.1 million viewers.

The two channels proved more evenly matched on Sunday night, when the BBC averaged 5.8 million viewers for its three-hour movie epic Titanic.

The film initially suffered against ITV1 favourites Coronation Street and Where the Heart Is.

But ITV1's ratings tailed off when Where the Heart Is gave way to a repeat of Midsomer Murders, allowing BBC1's ratings to peak at nearly 8 million for the end of Titanic.

Channel 4's Sunday night ratings slumped to barely more than a million, well behind Channel Five, as a documentary-heavy schedule failed to pull in the viewers.

But overall it was a strong ratings weekend for Channel 4 thanks to its cricket coverage.

The channel's Sunday afternoon coverage of the third test against South Africa averaged 1.7 million viewers, more than any other channel except BBC1.

Channel 4 also performed well on Saturday afternoon, with coverage of the day's racing and the cricket easily beating BBC1's Grandstand.

BBC1's coverage of Saturday's Ireland v Wales rugby union match averaged just 900,000 viewers to Channel 4's 1.4 million.

On Friday night Eyes Down, BBC1's new sitcom starring Lily Savage creator Paul O'Grady, failed to make a big impact.

The show attracted 4.9 million viewers but was beaten by a repeat of A Touch of Frost on ITV1 with 5.8 million viewers.

Ratings for BBC2's Restoration swelled by 300,000 on last week to reach a very respectable 2.3 million, easily beating Channel 4 sitcoms Will and Grace and Scrubs.

Does anyone else think that they are being extra hard on anyone who got through last year.

And to put Gareth's sister through because she's Gareth's sister and Andy basically because he was Lisa Scott Lee's brother. They should be judged on their performance as everyone is.

AndyJK
06-09-2003, 12:17 PM
There is no question in mind Simon Cowell made a gross error of judgement putting Garath's sister through to the next stage purely on the basis that she was Gareth's sister. Simon tried to justify it by saying 'that's the record business'. The other judges didn't seem very impressed.

Contestants should go through on their performances, not who their relations are.

I'd like to hear more of the discussions between the Judges when they make the decisions on the cut. I felt very sorry for the 'large girl' (cant remember her name). Simon showed what a hypocrite he can be. It seems this year that image is everything. He said that the girl had a really good voice and personality but was too large to make it. But what about Ruben in American Idol. He too had a great voice and personality and was very large - did he look like a pop idol. I think not, but Simon really praised him all through. What's good for one is good for all.

bbceleb1
08-09-2003, 08:42 PM
I agree busybee,
but...

Ruben lived in America, and this is the UK and with regards to pop idol i dont believe someone like her could win, he had that useless excuse for a man 'Rick wallar ' last year and i dont believe he would have won,

btw did anyone else have no sympathy for him! hes arrogant and rude! he wont help himself, i caught Nicky on GMTV or loosewomen the other day saying how horrible he was and should would never have put him through! ohh thats better :wavey:

I just watched this week's Pop Idol on video (great show btw) and it was Pete Waterman who was saying the two large girls shouldn't go through because he didn't think they had the right image.

Simon was the one supporting them, and when Pete asked when someone who looked like that ever sold a million records Simon mentioned Alison Moyet and Meatloaf.

Simon also put through two people on the strength of their personalities - Tariq, and also the girl from Liverpool (Rachel?) who didn't stop talking. I didn't think she gave a single good audition, from what I saw - and in the group peformance completely fell apart.

The 10 contestants on this week's show are on the website:

http://www.itv.com/popidol/top50.stm

AndyJK

I can't believe Emma did not even finish in the top 5. I thought she sang really well tonight and took on a tough song, and received some positive comments from judges Nicki and Neil. I couldn't believe Cowell when he compared her to a 'caberet singer' :bawling:. I thought Jason sang terribly and for him to finish 3rd really was a shock :conf:.

I cringed when fat Eddy started blubbing like a baby :bawling::bawling:, he even cried more than the girls did and he received fairly okish responses from the judges too.

Michelle sang well although she doesn't look like a Pop Idol to me, and Chris was ok.

James
13-09-2003, 10:56 PM
Yeah I can't understand either about Emma, and how do you spell her name - is it Emma - as on the website - or Ema as they had it on screen? That could of affected the number of text votes she got.

Jason getting third must of had something to do with the sympathy vote that Simon talked about.

I agree with the public vote in that Michelle is a very good singer, although I don't know if I like the Reverend's voice all that much. Those two got the most press publicity in the week which certainly helped them.

I think Michelle has got a great voice, but its such a shame that she has got it into her mind that if she wants to get on she must lose weight (probably true, but what a reflection of our society).

I wasnt impressed with any of the others. And the way that Jason behaved just showed that he is too immature to cope with the cut throat world of show business. He can always come back next year.

James
14-09-2003, 11:27 PM
I think Kate Thornton does a fairly good job on Pop Idol Extra. However, the after-vote show is pretty gruesome in all honesty.

'Oh, look Jason's crying again. Why don't I go over there and make him feel worse about it'

'Do you know you only missed out by 1.5%?'

'Oh, I thought telling you that would make you feel better!'

James

The Sun says there is going to be a wildcard show.

TWO Pop Idol flops will be handed a second chance to make it through to the final, it was revealed yesterday.

One wannabe will be voted in by the public and another by the four judges on a Wildcard Show — based on the same format used on American Idol 2.

After the public select their final ten, judges Simon Cowell, Nicki Chapman, Neil Fox and Pete Waterman will call back eight hopefuls from the 40 who failed to make the grade.

Those eight will perform once more for the judges and hope to grab one of the two extra places.

A show spokesman said: “Just when you thought your favourite contestant was out of the show forever we’ll be giving them a second chance.”

This means Jason — who missed out on a place in the final by just TWO votes on

Saturday — and lapdancer Rebecca could yet win Pop Idol.

Hosts Ant and Dec will announce the results in another nail-biting live show.

The ITV series producer Claire Horton said “We’ve seen so much talent so far on this series and the calibre is really high, I’m sure the public and judges alike, will be keen to give the Pop Idols that haven’t made it to the final ten one last chance.”

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2003430485,,00.html

I'm not sure how they will decide the 8 places in the wildcard heat if there are 5 final-50 shows. Maybe it's a case of the judges choosing their favourites.

Has anyone else noticed that this year image seems to be the most important thing.

James
21-09-2003, 11:33 PM
If you ask me, Simon Cowell can be inconsistent in his comments. Last week he was on about how many of the competitors gave a performance just to get throught the audition, but isn't that what Brian did this week? Simon criticised Samantha for being over-dressed. Kirsty? (I agreed with the public vote for her though)

And one thing the judges don't seem to understand is that whoever wins Pop Idol is guaranteed to sell millions of records no matter what his or her image is.

Simon was very much interested in image over talent when it came to Maxwell on Saturday. He was one of the weakest vocalists but Simon still made positve comments. Of course, it could have something to with the fact that Simon once signed Maxwell to be part of a boy band. Also, Brian is related to a member of Westlife, who Simon also signed to the label he works for.

I thought maybe Adam should have gone through with Kirsty. Susanne got third, but she was very nervous in her performance.

It's a bit of a shock that one because Keiran was the strong favourite to go through. Pete Waterman was right though about picking the wrong song. Maybe Keiran can get through in the wildcard show.

Marc has been criticised in the Scottish press for having a criminal conviction. Obviously the public ignored that.

So what difference does that make to whether or not he can be a pop idol? I thought last night was a very strong group and should think that at least a couple of the wild cards will have sung last night.

James
28-09-2003, 08:33 PM
I should have mentioned before that he was convicted with two friends of a serious assault on a man who nearly died. He was jailed for a year and his friends went to prison for four and six years.

Maybe they even want the controversy.

I'm really pleased Susanne has made it through to the final 10. There is something very unique about this girl and she has such a great voice. Whether she wins Pop idol or not - and with certain manipulation occuring I have a feeling she won't, I still believe she has a singing career ahead of her.

Her last 3 performances have been exceptional, and even when she goes out of tune as was clearly notable during last night's performance of the Alanis Morissette song she still carries through in her own style with such vigour.
