Simon Cowell has offered Britney Spears a chance to audition for American Idol.

The 'Toxic' singer had previously been scheduled to appear on the reality TV show, but pulled out after Cowell reportedly asked her to provide a live performance.

Following the singer's appearance at the MTV Video Awards, which was dubbed an embarrassment by critics, the X Factor judge has said he would give Spears another chance, but only as a contestant.

He told the Daily Star: "Sure, she can come on American Idol - as a contestant. Although if it’s anything like her disastrous return at the MTV Video Music Awards, I wouldn’t put her through to the second round.

He added: "She should have been pulled off the bill that night to save any chance she had of resurrecting her career."

It was reported yesterday that Cowell and his fellow X Factor judge Louis Walsh didn't think Britney Spears would even be able to get through to the second round of their reality TV show.

Britney is a okay singer, but her attitude, style and star quality that has made her millions. Now she has gone off the rails and lost it all. I don't think anyone really can take her seriously anymore.

She's going to need to do a lot to prove herself. Hard work will pay off, but at the moment things are probably a bit too overwhelming for her. Thinking about the good songs she had in the past though, as well as her image, the image in particular seems to be tarnished now.

But I hope that even if she isn't as actively involved in her music career, she doesn't leave it on a bad note like this.

Nothing wrong with britney speares, she could win x-facter hands down. Simon Cowell knows loads about the business of music, but he will know how good Britney is and she is really good, got all her cds and some picsand her dvd concert

i really like britney, but im so sorry for what has happened to her in the last couple of years.

I feel sorry for her, but i really do hope she pulls herself together and get her creer on track!

So what if Britney's not performing good atm, it's not at all surprising considering her current state of mind.
It doesn't mean she's any less of a great singer.

she's a great singer, i have all her songs which i downloaded ages ago, i know shes been through hell with all that problems shes had, going to rehab and cutting her hair off and men, but she will keep singing great songs

I dont think Britney is a great singer. There is millions of far better singers then here. Britney is a okay singer - but it is because of the amount of money invested in her, because of her star quality that has made as big as she is today.

I personally think, if 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' was realised now, Britney would not be as successful.

its a question of personal taste i guess, i think shes cool and love much of her songs and i know she does try to be Madonna, but she never will be really. She made it big at the right time and i wont disagree on that, perhaps today if she released Hit me baby one more time, she wouldny get very far with it, but i guess we will never know
