Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty has been arrested and held at Mumbai airport for obscenity charges in connection with the public kiss between her and Richard Gere.
Gere kissed Shetty five months ago during an AIDS awareness charity event in India, causing outrage from strict Hindus who claimed Shetty had violated the country's obscenity laws.
The Celebrity Big Brother star was reportedly stopped while she was travelling to Berlin today to attend this weekend's opening of musical Miss Bollywood.
A court issued an arrest warrant against Chicago actor Gere and prevented Shetty from leaving the country, but the immigration department had failed to see that it had been overturned by the Supreme Court, because it did not appear on its computer system.
Spokesman for the star, Dale Bhagwagar, said: "She called me in the middle of the night and was in tears."
Shetty said: "I can understand something like this if I'd committed a criminal offence. But what was my offence, when I'm just an actor, going to perform a musical on foreign land?"
Shetty has now been allowed to continue her journey and join her dance troupe after she had to undergo a series of questions.

The whole controversy about the kiss was just manufactured by a small hard-line political party, making a mountain out of a molehill. I'm glad she's allowed to get to the opening of Miss Bollywood though!

I don't like Shilpa, in all honesty I find her really annoying, but she comes across as a nice person and doesn't deserve this.

Richard Gere grabbed her anyway by surprise and kissed her. What could she do about that? Why should she be punished for it even if it is the law?

BB winner Shilpa was 'not arrested'Shilpa Shetty's UK spokeswoman has denied that the Bollywood star was arrested in India over her kiss with Richard Gere.
The Celebrity Big Brother winner was stopped at Mumbai Airport by immigration officials on her way to the opening of the Miss Bollywood musical in Berlin.
But the spokeswoman said she was not arrested or detained.
Earlier, the Bollywood star's Indian spokesman, Dale Bhagwagar, said: "She called me in the middle of the night and was in tears."
But UK spokeswoman Teji Singh said: "Every time Shilpa leaves the country she has to show her paperwork, because of the Richard Gere thing.
"There was absolutely no detention, no arrest whatsoever. She was rummaging through to get her paperwork and just stepped aside to a side room so she wouldn't block the queues.
"She wasn't crying. She was bunged up with the flu and she was only in there for eight to 15 minutes."
Hollywood star Gere, 58, caused an outcry when he grabbed Shetty, 32, swept her backwards, and kissed her several times on the cheek at an Aids-awareness event earlier this year.
Gere swooped down on Shetty in April after shouting in Hindi to thousands of truckers "No condom, no sex".
Shetty went on to defend the actor, saying "so much has been blown out of proportion", and Gere apologised for causing offence.

l don't think she has broken the law,is just some stupid people have nothing better to do in their spare time and just have to make a small matter into a big thing and it went over the top.lf she is broken the law she such have some kind of punishment and she hasn't.
ln this case Shilpa is so wrong to be blamed,Richard Gere just grabbed her and was all over her, what can she do ,apart from just laughing it off,you don't expect her to push him alway and slap him .After all he is a guest to the country ,who has done alot for the charity.Richard just simply thinks Shilpa is stunning and he just can't help not to touch her:hug:

Could you explain the law please? (Genuine question, not a challenge).
Because, last night for instance - I watched a bollywood movie produced in Mumbai in India (Hum Tum) and there was not only a full kissing scene but there was a masked sex scene too.
It's not like this is a one-off either - because in other Bollywood movies I've seen (Parineeta) there have been even 'raunchier' scenes (mild by our standards).

Shilpa actually didn't break any law about kissing. Richard initiated the kiss, Shilpa was just kissed by him.

Just thought I'd post this here instead of a new thread since it's related:
Shetty's Spokeswoman Denies Arrest
A spokeswoman for Shilpa Shetty has dismissed reports that the actress was arrested in India over her clinch with Richard Gere.
The Celebrity Big Brother winner was thought to have been stopped by immigration officials at Mumbai Airport as she prepared to travel to the opening of the Miss Bollywood musical in Berlin.

Responding to Indian spokesman Dale Bhagwagar's claim that Shetty had telephoned him "in tears", Singh said: "She wasn't crying. She was bunged up with the flu and she was only in there for eight to 15 minutes."
