Try writing a realistic story, maybe related to terrorism or politics. Try and stay away from forum articles if you want to write something that looks professional.

Cool career choice. I previously wanted to be a journalist, but at the moment am not as enthusiastic about the prospect as I used to be. And I know that enthusiasm is extremely important if you want to go into the profession, so make sure you have that because that’s half of the battle won. If you have an eye for fishing out storylines, ideas etc. and are creative that’s all the more useful.

A good command/grasp of the English language is obviously important, but even so, within the journalism field there are plenty of job options as with any other profession, therefore the choices may well be hard to get in to but they won’t be limited. I’m not 100% sure as to which college course you should take, but I would assume English/English Literature would be quite useful if you’re thinking of doing A Levels at college.

Otherwise, the only other advice I can think of giving would be to read plenty.

Your topic is: New government laws which enable them to be able to listen to everyone's phone calls and look at everyone's text messages to try and combat terrorism.

Actually yeah, the TiBB Serious Debates section provides a great foundation for this sort of thing. You could even do research etc. before posting a response to make sure you're fully aware of what you're saying, if you're that into it and that into journalism. Even responsing to some of those threads or even reading them could develop some necessary skills.
