View Full Version : Too many banners..

Lately, some members are having banners in their sig that are over the size limit or having 10 or so banners when the maximum number is 1 banner (550px by 300px) or two banners (550px by 150px). Banners that are too big mess up forum pages and too many banners look awful, especially if most of them are animated. I think that this issue needs to be sorted out so that the forum looks tidier.

When they are too many on one sig, the mods deal with them and ask the members either to delete them or to reduce them.

I know exactly what you mean.... it sometimes take ages to load a page, I tend to switch banners off in my control panel so I dont have to load them

They used to, but it doesn't look like they do anymore apart from when they are informed.

The last resort for me will be to switch off the banner thing.

Normally if people dont size down to the requested amount mods and admin go on to name and shame
does it matter how wide your banner is??because mine does exceed 550!

A certian member had a huge banner in their sig the other day, I asked them politely if they could re-size it via. U2U as it was making TiBB pages that they were posting in over sized. They refused and told me it would be easier for me to get a widescreen monitor and then both of us would be pleased. Some members on here have no common sense at all.

The one problem with your banner being too big is that it makes the forum pages wider than they are meant to be.

I've pointed this out countless times!
I work away quietly in the background resizing banners I come across that are too wide or too tall, and where members have too many banners, I do U2U them and ask them to reduce their sig.
If there are any particularly large ones at the moment, please U2U and let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Yeah, you should have two banners maximum which are 550px by 150px max or one banner that is 550px by 300px max.

what should I get rid of?
Your sig is about twice the size it should be, postandpollmad ............ something's got to go! In fact, quite a lot's got to go!

I'd say delete both the flashing banners and all of the small videos. Leaving your large banner and the text underneath. That should do it.

We're going to have to get rid of the large animated gif video avatars also... they're too slow on dial-up connections. For example this page alone is about 10 MB which takes 23 mins to completely load on dial-up.
I suggest 200-250 KB as the limit for now.

Other than banners another thing I have noticed recently is the megabytes of avatars I have had to download that I don't really care about.
On one thread I found myself downloading 3 avatars which totaled about 6MB of useless junk. Animated avatars in the region of 50KB to 100KB and can look good, but there is no need for them to be massive.

Yeah, hopefully one day dial up will be phased out and everyone will have to have broadband. It's cheap enough now so I don't know why people are still using dial up.

It's not just dial-up. I have broadband and I find it highly annoying. It stops me downloading stuff while I'm on the site and if anyone else is using the internet in the house then the pages never fully load until after I have finished reading the page.

Maybe the forum should introduce a new 'hide avatar' feature.

They slow down even on broadband if you open a lot of browser tabs.

If we are talking about avatars yours is 2.4 MB, while CathalOS's is 1.4 MB and Matthew's is a massive 7.8 MB.
So for just this page in this thread that is 11.8 MB of animated GIF's.

Depends on lots of factors but it would be under James suggested guidelines.

I like it but it's a size issue.
I would like to see a cut down version of it or a slide show version. The problem with GIF's is the rubbish compression the format provides. If you have lots of frames they just get to big.

Yours is a more respectable 871.9 KB, but still over James size guidelines.

JPEG which is a which contains a compression algorithm so you can balance picture quality against size. Unfortunately it is just a picture format and doesn't support animation which is provided by it's sister format known as MPEG 1.
On the subject of banners, I have a question:
I am currently using a PHP script (hosted on my own webspace) as an image in my sig which shows two different banners at random. I am doing this in order to save sig space whilst still having multiple banners.
Is this OK?

It just needs cutting down. There is no reason why you can't have a animated avatar as long as it doesn't contain too many frames.
My guess is that everyone is using some kind of software to convert small film clips to animated GIF's and they are unaware of the size they are.I don't think anyone is doing it on purpose it is just happening.

FYI, the two banners I am using are no more than 17.5kb (each).

ROTFL @ THE MONITOR THING.
I've been trying to keep mine small.
I know I save mine as .png which slows pages but I use them on multiple sites, so most of them I've used somewhere else, but I'll HAPPILY resize them if they're too much.
Atm, I have 3 icons, which I hope are okay, but I can shrink them from 150x150 to 100x100 if necessary.
Also, my av is the first vid one I've made, and I tried to keep it as small as possible. It has like.. eight frames o.0 It's 27kb, which I think is okay..
&&PLEASE could there be a rule for how many animations a user can have at once. Some have 3-5 animations and not only do they not actually play because they take so long, but they're annoying when they slow down a page.
