Will Big Brother be the most famous and remembered show in the UK ever?

I think it probably will. I don't know any other shows that get as much hype surrounded by them and as much media attention. I also don't know any other show that has such a love it or hate it factor. It causes such a divide and also had one of the biggest TV controversies of the 21st Century (the race row in CBB5). Its so talked about and even people who hate it say they can't escape it.

So will BB the most famous and remembered show in the UK?

I'm not a specialist of UK Television but I can confirm that in every country where Big Brother has taken place, it had a major impact and it will be remembered for a couple of year. I think it was the confirmation of the 21st Century. So yes, I think it will be one of the biggest show ever.

I didn't mean it would be the most popular. But my gran and grandad hate it and so do most of my friends at school but they say they still can't escape it. It won't go down as the most popular but I definitely suspect the most rememberd.

I will never be the most remembered show in the UK, as much as it would be nice for it to be. In other countries, yes. In Australia and Germany it's been the biggest veiwed programme ever. In the UK, the most it's got is 7.5 million. Compared to Eatenders/Coronation ST, thats nothing, they make double that every day!. I will be the most remembered reality show probably though.

It's not about popularity it's about the fact it has given a new type of TV. Look at all these shows about coaching, super Nanny etc... Nowadays, most of the shows are about people's life, inside their life, something it never happened before.
Big Brother was the beginning, in every country, of a new generation and a new type of TV as much as the TV games were 60 years before. It had the same impact.

Last year in Australia it was even in the top 20 programmes. Its nowhere near the same impact as the UK.

Also, ratings don't mean anyhting it being remembered. I can't be bothered going over my argument again but I will say no-one in the UK can escape BB, but I can easily escape any soap. Soaps are just little comfortable shows people watch when they get home to relax. Also, I thought you said you were a BB master - BB3's final got 10 million people watching, BB5's got 9.1 or something and BB7 got 8.7 or close to it,

Personally I will remember such shows a Faulty Towers, the Young Ones and Bottom..... classic comedy.

Bb does hold a special place in my heart but I wouldnt put it down as the best show in history of the UK

I haven't said it will be THE best show ever in the UK. But you have to agree on the fact that Big Brother gave a new type of TV: The Real TV. And it's not just about Big Brother, Survivor, X Factor etc... there are some shows like Super Nanny, Extreme Makeover etc... so it shows that the whole idea of watching people 24/7 was a revolution.

For the Dutch version, it hasn't been cancelled as the contract isn't broken. It has been intrrumpted because of "The Golden Cage" a never ending show on the same channel.

Launch shows don't count, obviously their going to get tonnes of veiwings, after the first week the ratings usually flop. This year is a prime example.

Yes, they did - for an extremely similair show that they made instead. Its format isn't reall dying. People aren't getting sick of BB - they were saying the same thing after BB4. Its always been moaning with BB fans, about how BB has become stale and rubbish. There was never a year without it. People were saying the same thing in BB2!

And you are completely ignoring my point - its not bloody popularity we're arguing about.

And to KizWiz. You're probably right for your generation in terms of popularity. But I think reality TV (BB specifically) is the new comedy for the new generation. BB also gets amazing ratings for a show thats on CH4 - holds the highest ratings for any show on CH4 ever.

Not obligated as a show can be popular at the moment and not be remembered 10 years later.
It's about the whole idea: watching people 24/7, that's why it will be remembered a long time.

Not always. The media attention that surrounds the whole bloody thing means that its hard to forget. I don't know a more media covered event than the whole Jade-Shilpa thing.

As I have said for a CH4 show it gets the best ratings. Even BB8 did I think. If the same show was on ITV it would get twice the ratings, and then if it was on BBC1 it would be through the roof!

Your right there, within the genre of reality TV, BB will go down as the greatest in history. I mean, look how it caught on all over the world. Its now done its 8th series in the Uk and its still pulling in the punters. Not many shows can say that.

I've been watching BB since the very first show of BB1 and there was big show for the launch night they just walked in with their suitcases....lol

As the show as gone on its become more and more popular because in most cases it holds its fan base and also attracts new watchers each year.

I totally agree it's C4 holding the ratings back, but BB's ratings are nothing compared to many other UK shows.

So there for BB isn't that popular. Just one of the most tlaked about shows ever.

Yes, but the channel is already one factor. Then there is also the fact that it has late night slot. 9pm/10pm isn't going to promise good ratings. Its also more of a show for young people. I mean how many grannys do you think are honestly going to enjoy people getting pissed and naked and swearing and arguments and sex etc. They find it offensive. In spite of all those reasons, BB is the most talked about show when it is on, ratings or no ratings. Anyway, Corination Street and Eastenders have excellent channells/ time slots and have been going on for years so people will just be in the routine of watching them.

Also, about the time slot for BB. Nowadays alot of people have sky+ so they'll just record it on that, and they don't get recorded onto the ratings.

CH4 is third, but BBC2 and it often switch while BB isn't on. And this thread was about if it would be the most talked about ever not the most popular anyway.

I know, and I said at the end that yes, it is. I remember reading in the paper about BB, and although it isn't as popular as it was, it still remains one of the most talked about UK shows ever.

I would say BB7 was just as popular as any other series. But the new technology that came around in BB took a toll on its ratings. I hate when people say "No-one watches BB any-more and its became so so rubbish and its ratings keep going on down and it needs to be cancelled" after BB8. It was a bad series! Does that mean every series to follow is going to be bad. NO! What came after BB4 - BB5.

Yeah I agree. I luv BB, in fact BB8 was one of my favs. The only reason people went off it is because they started the show off all women, as mainly women watch the show, they moaned, sulked and spat they dummy out because there were "no fit guys, hot sext guy innit" in there.

True. But I didn't really like the BB8 - it just didn't feel like BB. It felt so wrong. I'm not sure why they were complaining as Ziggy got hurriedly shoved in on Day 3.
