Britney vs the Catholic Church

Child custody shenanigans, Lazarus-like musical comebacks and now religious controversy.

Yes, today's (October 31)Britney Spears drama comes courtesy of the Roman Catholic Church.

On the inside sleeve of her new album 'Blackout', the be-wigged one is seen sitting on a priest's lap in a confession booth while wearing fishnet stockings.

All very 'Carry On Vicar' you might think, but the Catholic League have got their, erm, knickers in a twist nevertheless.

Kiera McCaffrey, the director of the Catholic League, said: "She should be focusing on singing and dancing and trying to be an entertainer without mocking a Catholic sacrament.

"What would be great is if she got serious about her religious faith and instead of mocking the confessional maybe she could visit one for its intended purpose."

Indeed. If she does go we can definitely conclude that they've started putting Cheetos in the holy water fountains.

That guy probably isn't even a vicar anyway.

She is just trying to copy what Madonna did with "Like a prayer" only the priest is not black. That isn't as controversial nowadays as people are becoming more educated.

It will definitely cause controversy. Artists can cause controversy with sex, violence etc but if you really want to get it cracking then they have to disrespect religion. Look at all the fuss surrounding the Da Vinci code, The Jerry Springer musical and the Satanic verses. Well done Britney.

Another ploy to get her in the news.

Cant they just leave her alone....so what its not a real priest she is just being sexy and she looks soooooo hot in those pics :wink: they are just doing this because it will get the church in the headlines and give more bad press to Britney..... i mean we hardly in an era where sex cant be shown they did a similar thing with Madonna like a preyer video GET OVER IT!!!

But that the point entirely. To cause true controversy and upset millions of people, I think, you have to have a pop at religion. I think Britney was rather stupid (again!!!) to do this.

Not really... i mean yeah it is controversual BUT we not in the past no more i personnaly dont find them offenesive and nor do my mates...this will just publise the ALbum EVEN MORE :spin::spin::spin::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

It may well publicise the album more but having a pop at religion will always cause controversy. I hope she doesn't claim that she didn't know what she was doing when she had these photos done.

By sitting a vicars lap looking like a slut, she is completely disrespecting that religion. People see this differently but deeply religious types are offended by the slightest thing.

I guarantee these photo's will offend many good humble church going people. Why should we be bothered by the fact that you're not offended? To sit on a vicars lap dressed suggestively shows a certain lack of respect for what that represents. Do you not see that? OK maybe you dont but do you remember the controversy surround the Da Vinci code - A work of fiction merely hinted that the bible may not be entirely truthful and a massive fuss was caused world wide. The Jerry Springer musical showed Jesus as a naive child provoked outrage and a standing protest outside the theatre on its first few night. Salman Rushdie wrote the Satanic verses - satire on the muslim prohet Mohamed - The Ayatollah called for his death. Any disrespectful religious immigary will always - ALWAYS - cause controversy. When the religous right in America gets hold of this we'll see how naive Britney was to do these pictures.

I seem to remember Sinead O'Connor upsetting the catholic church once with a few choice words too. Challenge religion and it gets you in hot water.

Jeez.

Actually, I’ m a bit of a closet Britney fan. I just think her priorities are upside down. Does the fact you think I hate her tell us anything about your judgement? She’s a catholic too isn’t she? I see the church have said in the article that they feel she shouldn’t have done these pictures "She should be focusing on singing and dancing and trying to be an entertainer without mocking a Catholic sacrament.” That’s a direct quote from the article. You may not find the pictures offensive but no one has ever asked if you did? The fact remains, these pictures were taken in order to cause controversy and, on that front, they’ve succeeded.

All these photos for the album were taken by Ellen von Unwerth, who specializes in "erotic femininity". But again, Britney is blamed, when it probably wasn't even her concept.
