If they're american, then it's no wonder they don't know what a fish and chip shop is...

1. Because they don't have them over there.
2. Because "chips" to them means crisps, so fish and crisps would sound a bit random to say the least.

Basically it's a place people go to get meals to take home with them, or a takeaway if you're familiar with that term.

Problem is you have "fries" over there, which are thin like from mcdonalds.
So it's hard to explain what chips are, but they're basically fries but bigger and thicker =]

They usually serve fish and chips, as well as pies, sausages and plenty of other foods. They usually serve canned drinks too.

Ok, What you have is a fillet of fish, usually cod or haddock. The fish is then dipped in batter and deep fried. Batter is a mix of water and flour, you can add salt or beer to taste.

Battered Fish recipe.

For a crispy batter, mix 125g plain flour with 10fl oz (1/2 pint) beer, or sparkling water. Add the liquid slowly, and beat until the batter is smooth. Coat your fish in flour, knocking off any excess, before dipping in the batter. Make sure it is coated well! Then fry in hot oil for 4-5 mins, until the batter is golden and crispy.

Key success factors or issues are:

Getting the fat really hot - testing it by dropping in a teaspoon of batter which should puff and float. If it sinks, the oil is too cold.
*

The choice of oil is vital. English fish and chips fans swear by beef dripping, but many would prefer a plain odourless oil such as corn or sunflower.
*

The choice of beer is important too. A recent prizewinner in a TV cook-off knocked the socks off judges by using a full-bodied beer rather than the more usual lager.
*

Adding a bit of something fizzy at the last moment increases the puff-up factor, if that's what you're looking for. What's the point of adding fizzy water early in the mixing if you're going to beat out the bubbles? As always, experiment and see what suits you.

As a recipe, you could try folding a suitable size and shape of fish fillet around a piece of cheese and cooked ham before pinning it with a small soaked-in-water cocktail stick and then battering and cooking.




As has been pointed out, British chips are what you would call fries, but they are on steroids compared to your thin fries. A chip would be like 4-6 fries in one.

The mouth-watering great British chip is easy to recreate. Just follow this recipe.

Recommended serving

125-175g (4-6oz) potatoes per person.

Preparation

Peel the potatoes and cut them into large, even-sized chips. Place in a bowl of cold water until required to remove excess starch. Drain and dry well, then place in small batches in a chip basket for the traditional method, or in a bowl for even chips.

Traditional method

Heat the oil, preferably sunflower or corn, to 190C/375F, then lower the chips into the oil and fry for five to six minutes, until soft but not browned. Shake the basket a couple of times to ensure even cooking.

Lift out of the basket and drain the chips on absorbent kitchen paper, whilst heating the oil to 200C/400F. The cooking process can be halted at this stage until required.

Return the chips to the oil for two to three minutes to brown. Drain well and serve immediately. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Malt Vinegar is a must for British fish and chips.

Forgot to finish what i was saying about the fats. Up north they are more likely to use beef dripping to cook the chips in as a posed to corn or vegetable oil down south. dripping tastes better but it means that veterinarians can't have them.

[skipton is only small, so if you ever went there you'd find the chip shop instantly, it's on a river front, near a bridge, with benches outside overlooking the water.]

Thats very cool of you my friend. I reckon it needs halving in size at least, and some other pirate pictures to go on the rest of the banner, with some nice piratey font. A ship is definitely needed.
