I mean, people are saying reality TV is dying but soaps have been going for much longer and they have less ratings than they used to. They're also cheaper and less intelligent than reality TV shows (well some).
Scarlett.

 Why should soaps end
They are intellegent, and yeah they have less ratings because SKY TV was invented, but Corrie had 17 spots in this years 20 highest rated programmes

I agree - but you called them intelligent.
Anyway I wasn't saying soaps should die, I was just wondering if they will.
And Pokemon probably should die - but I still love it!

If Hollyoaks is HO then I'm afraid you're wrong there. I'm no soap expert, but I do believe there was a little CH4 soap called Brookside, was there not? :bigsmile:I definitely don't think it'll last too long.
And Emmerdale has a chance - even a huge fan like you has to admit it. I mean its dying out. For a soap on ITV its doing dreadful!
Eastenders and Coronation Street are the only ones I can see lasting longer than 20 years more (unless Emmerdale turns it around somehow).
And yes, I know, we're all Pokemon fans at heart!

Yes, or it will crash and burn the likes of which a soap has never seen before!

Well, it hasn't gotten cancelled yet (and it'll have went through its rough patches I suspect) so I don't see why it won't end up being 94 years old - holy mother of god, a 94 year old show!

Hopefully they will get replaced by real dramas that have some kind of message and dares to challenge the status quo.
Soaps are mindless rubbish to stop the mass's from thinking and questioning the nanny police state in which we now live thanks to the Labour Government.

Good thread.
I like what Red is saying in his post but, un fortunately soaps will never die. Series type dramas cost way way too much to make. Reality TV will go some way to replacing soaps as they are the other end of the spectrum ie cheap TV but, soaps will be around for ever. They're cheap, easy to follow and, at times, quite interesting.

Don't think ITV would cancel it, though you never know!
A couple of ratings questions as you're such a soap buff-
Do you know what the average ratings are for Coronation Street and Eastenders are for their whole run?
Also, how long have EE and Emmerdale been going for?

EE has been going on for less than Emmerdale. I find that odd for some reason, yet it seems so obvious.
And if you aren't sure on the ratings, do you happen to know which one is the most popular of all time.
P.S. How cool must it be to have watched Coronation Street since Episode 1 and never missed an episode!

They have all been going far too long now. They are so unrealistic.
All of the cast of Eastenders need to go and visit the Doctors for some antidepressants and some of them need even stronger medication.
I wouldn't call watching a group mentally ill characters living a square entertainment.

Is that all Eastenders is about?
I tuned into the opening scene of an episode and it seemed quite cheery to me.

They have to be they have dulled peoples brains so much over the years that if the plot was complicated they wouldn't be able to follow it.

EastEnders and Corronation Street will be on till the end of time and I'm not taking the p**s.
Hollyoaks will have more trouble staying on as it has a fickle teen audience but soaps like Corrie and EE have been on for decades and are a part of British culture as well as having millions of loyal fans.
