Sam & Amanda: “We Love Manchester”EX-MAN MET students Sam and Amanda Merchant took the Big Brother House by storm earlier with their dancing, giggling and cringe worthy catchphrases.
But despite living the showbiz lifestyle in London the blonde haired twins admit they can’t wait to go back to Man Met to complete their degrees. The party girls, who recently released a cover version of Aqua’s corny hit Barbie Girl, say they are taking a year out before coming back to Manchester.
The twins have landed £1 million contracts to promote an array of toiletries. They’ve launched their own perfume and are booked in to turn on Christmas lights across the country.
But the girls, who now live in London, have their hearts set on being ‘ordinary’ students again. “We went to Man Met last year it was the best thing ever,” squealed Sam.
“We did Social Work at Manchester Met. We passed our first year and now we’re having a year out, but we’re definitely going back there. I love it loads. We miss it so much. We miss all the parties that go on there.”
Her twin sister Amanda, who is dating Big Brother Winner Brian Belo, says she would rather live in Manchester than London. Giggling, she says that she absolutely loves the student lifestyle, and can’t wait to come back to the city.
“Manchester is the best place to go to university. We loved it. Loved it,” she says.
“We’ve convinced all our friends to go to Manchester Met because we loved it so much. They’ve all come up this year.
“I miss the student life. When you go out in a club in Manchester you can make friends really easily there. Everyone wants to have a really good laugh. I think at London it’s a different environment – like totally different.”
The girls love going out in Manchester and used to work at M2 – home to The University of Manchester’s Wednesday night AU.
“We liked indie places - 42nd street and things like that, Fifth Ave, Pure things like that, those were our favourites. We loved them all so much. We used to work at M2,” adds Sam.
Loved by schoolgirls, Big Brother enthusiasts and men across the land, the nineteen-year-olds lives have changed beyond recognition in the last few months. The self-proclaimed cheeky girls couldn’t walk down the street without turning heads before they were famous – but now everyone knows who they are.
Sam admits that life has changed for them beyond recognition. “I know, so much. Everything’s just good, everything’s just so much fun,” says the excited twin.
“We do miss being at home with all our friends and going out and stuff. But life has been so much more fun and so much pinker. I just love it so much. Dead good.”
“Everyone’s really really nice. People come up to us and stuff. Little kids will come up to us and stuff and they’re all really really cute.”
The girls, originally from Newcastle-under-Lyme, near Stoke love to flirt with guys when they are out. Amanda’s relationship with Brian, which is now “pretty serious”, has been splashed across newspapers across the land. But Sam too has a boyfriend.
“No, I’m not single – I’ve got a boyfriend called Richard,” says Sam. She giggles, sounding embarrassed but very flattered when Student Direct suggests our male readers would be gutted.
Amanda is too embarrassed to talk about her relationship with Big Brother ‘Romeo’ Brian Belo. The Essex lad flirted constantly with the girls inside the house before finally getting together with Amanda outside.
“I’m still going out with him yeah,” says Amanda. But when pressed the embarrassed teen admits she is too shy to speak about their blossoming relationship.
Numerous Big Brother contestants have waltzed out of the Big Brother house in a blaze of publicity but shrunk back to anonymity just months later. Chav icon Jade Goody is the only show participant to have bucked the trend.
But endearing Sam and Amanda, loved and loathed by Manchester’s students in equal numbers, may well be the next to forge a full time showbiz career. Only time will tell whether we actually see them back in Manchester.
