How about getting a house rabbit? You could treat it like you would a cat or dog.

Ann my sister has the cutest little dwarf rabbit that lives in the house. Yep it has a cage but it is now litter trained (like a cat) and freely hops about the house 99% of the time. They make lovely house pets.
Shame you cant have a little dog though, real shame they are such great companions.
