BBC endurance show SAS: Are You Tough Enough? has been axed, The Sun reports today.

The production team were just two weeks away from starting to film the fourth series of the reality show when, at the last minute, 'the axe fell'.

An insider told the newspaper: "The ratings haven't been great and the show is dreadfully expensive to make. For the price of one series, you could make two new shows."

Dermot O'Leary was host of the three series, which were set in the UK, the Borneo Jungle, and the Nambian Desert.

A BBC spokeswoman confirmed that the show had been axed last night: "There will be no more SAS - The show has been successful on BBC2 and when it started it was very innovative but we have taken the format as far as we could."
