She'll still have a lot more experience working with paint than the other housemates, so I don't understand her problem.

When you study art, they make you study all aspects so she will have had to paint at some point...

So? I do art frequently (for GCSE + just at home, I do project etc.) and I try not to use paints as much as possible ... this could mean using pencils, pens, photography, installation etc.

She's a conceptual artist, which doesn't really mean using paint. You can say it's not art, but that's just your opinion - it's considered art, hence why it's called Conceptual Art.
