The umbles were the poorer cuts of meat, kind of like the stuff going into haggis or something like that I suspect, hence when you were in an impoverished or weakened position that was what you ate.

I suspect the nearest would be the Cornish Pasty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasty) which was a surprise to me as before I looked it up I thought it would be the Scotch Pie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_pie) which I love as well as the pasty
