WHEN Irish pop royalty BOYZONE last performed together back in 2000 they left the scene with a catalogue of hits, huge fanbase and their boy next door image preserved.
Well, that’s as long as you don’t include the tattooed and pierced frame of SHANE LYNCH.
However, taking the stage for their first live gig in eight years at London's G.A.Y they couldn’t have looked more different or sexed up - unless they donned some bumless chaps and baby oil.
The lads sported circus ringmaster togs at the start, before dumping them to reveal a new, beefed-up Prison Break-esque image, including leather trousers, tight vests and countless tattoos.
It looked like they have been hitting the gym hard in preparation for their comeback and made the rampant crowd go even wilder.
Their new image has a rougher, dirtier feel and couldn’t be further away from the boys next door image they once had.
The set was indeed polished, the combination of simple dance routines and vocals from frontman RONAN KEATING and the group as a whole were on the money.
Shane and KEITH DUFFY were responsible for most of the banter which the crowd lapped up. Knickers were tossed stage-wards by the female part of the audience.
BUT unfortunately they sang only four of their hits - including When The Going Gets Tough, and Picture Of You - so the short set and lack of showmanship, plus the absence of backing dancers, meant their nineties magic which had earned them rave reviews for their live shows was somewhat lacking on this occasion.
Overall it was a decent enough first comeback gig at a smaller venue, but the lads will need to create more of a show and add some wow factor to maintain any sort of longevity and compete with the success of fellow comeback kids, TAKE THAT.
But with die hard fans, an image that will grab attention and of course the old Irish charm, the lads will no doubt have success again.
A quick note to STEPHEN GATELY though - get a new hairstyle, fella.
