THE original Captain Birdseye - actor John Hewer - has died aged 86.

The bearded star of the fish finger advertisements became an internationally known face after being picked for the cheery role in 1967.

He continued to appear in the ads until 1998, proving he had even more staying power than Ronald McDonald as his persona became the longest running 'brand personality' since the birth of food advertising.

Hewer, born in Leyton, East London, enjoyed an illustrious career, which included appearing in the original Broadway production of The Boyfriend opposite Julie Andrews, and in the TV mini-series Nicholas Nickleby.

He passed away in Brinsworth House, an actors’ retirement home in Middlesex, on March 16.

No more Captains table for him.

I think I'll check to see if he's on the death list.

With all due respect, this is about the actor, rather than the product he advertised.

As I mentioned in the other thread, can these two threads be merged please
