is flying really as safe as they say?

Hey everyone.

Im going on holiday tommorow and i just saw somthing on the news on how air traffic control avert near mid air collisions several times a week and its freaked me out.

I was just wondering has anyway ever been involved in an accident on a plane like near misses or really bad turbalence?

My dadworkswith planes, no he don't fly one, but he assure's me that anything bad that can go wrong on a plane very rarely does.

It is proven that the most dangerous part of going on holiday is driving to and from the airport. Flying is also proven to be the safest type of transport.

I LOVE flying! Everything about it is so cool. The airport, the atmosphere, the take off, the veiws, the relaxation, the landing... Between my whole family (We've been on planes countless times all around the place) the worst thing any of us have ever experienced are slight turbulants. And I've also heard alot of times that air travel is the safest way to get around. Nothing to worry about! :wink:

My sisters boyfriend works up at the Belfast International Airport with baggage handling and a few jobs out on the run-way. He told me there's never been a crash there and it's the islands second busiest airport after Dublin, so again, nothing to worry about :)

I just found this:

In 1996, the NTSB came up the statement that scheduled commercial airlines had a fatal accident rate of 0.026 per 100,000 flying hours. Translated very simply, this would show that a passenger would have to fly 24 hours a day for over 400 years before he would be involved in a fatal accident.

And there is only a 1 in 10 million chance of dying so it sounds pretty safe.

Don't believe everything you hear on the news. How many plane crashes have you heard about during the last ten years of your life.

Answer: "A handful, at most".

Don't worry yourself. Enjoy your holiday and your flight and try not to think too much about scare stories like this one. Tomorrow it could be a Cruise, like the one in your avatar.

They say that flying on an aeroplane is a lot safer than crossing the road, I concur a mate of mine was killed crossing the road - an aeroplane crashed on him.

i love airports too.the atmosphere is great especiay when its the summer and your going somwhere hot.

I AGree, (sorryabout the caps) i think that it is very safe indeed, and nowadays, aeroplanes must be at there best, especially with all the technology etc to do with a plane.

No prob lol :laugh: I really like it because it's big, extremely comfotable and quite luxurious/well kept, amazing shops, but not too many and everythings fast before departures.

Yeh its a really nice airport. I just spent a hole week in Belfast. its such an amazing city to visit and the ppl are just so nice. i cant wait to go back next year, i might even move out there one day so i dont have to keep flying back and forth.
