Entire 'Skins' cast will change

The executive producer of Skins has confirmed its entire cast will change for the next series.

Bryan Elsey said: "There are risks associated with dumping a cast, but we just did it. There was some disquiet at the channel, but then they told us just to go with it.

"It's exciting - we never stand still and we can tell our stories in a new way."

Speaking at Broadcast's television drama conference this week, he also confirmed the show would stick to its pattern of introducing college-age characters, moving them on in the next series, then letting them go.

"The first year is about getting to know the kids, and the second gives us the advantage of being able to explore their psyches a little more," said Elsey.

The show will also continue to use a team of up to 20 writers, including newcomers.


This is bullshit. I can't believe this. I didn't believe it before because the producer had said the rumours were "bullshit". I don't see the point behind this at all. If they are going to have collage student in series 3, then why not use the same cast. I'd much prefer seeing how Tony, Mich, Jal, Maxxie, Anwar, Chris, Cassie, Effy and others develop and change - then being introduced to a bunch of new characters. I think the producers/creators/writers are doing what suits them, and backing out because they would prefer to write about the "teen life" then having to have the characters grow up.

I think it is a good idea and it makes the show different by doing this. This series some of the character have got boring and I think by the end of the series it will be the right time to change the cast. It’s a very good idea but to make it work they must get the right characters and make it different next series.

Im all for it. Let Skins be a show that explores a different set of teenagers every few seasons , instead of letting it become stagnant , which it already has , despite people claiming its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Their eventualy going to run out of stereotypes though.

That's so stupid, what's the point of that? It destroys any objective of continuity, and I'm assuming that they're keeping the characters, which only serves to confuse viewers more.

No, it will be a new cast playing new characters.

I heard they had planned to do this each series but will do it every 2 instead. I also think they've done it because its not doing too well ratings wise on Channel 4.

Yeh, but its getting fantastic ratings on E4. Which is it's home-grown channel.

Think of it as Big Brother changing its housemates every year. Or Deal Or No Deal changing its contestants. Or any of the many shows that have rotated casts. Its called injecting excitement into the show.

Did I say the new cast wouldn't be good? I said I like this cast. You can't have a TV Show that's really successful then change the entire cast. It's the most stupid move they could have made.

I think its a stupid idea by getting rid of the cast there getting rid of veiwers on the skins site so many people are against it!!! I dont know if i will watch it anymore, it takes me a really long time to get used to these tv shows but when the first episode of skins come on it was people like chris and michelle etc that got me into it and then i carried on watching. I doubt they'll find others as good as the current skins cast!!!! :mad: x

Boo, that's a shame. Why scrap the cast which makes the show so successful? I'll probably watch the next series just to see how the new cast do but I'm going to miss seeing all the current cast and the characters they play.

It was people like Chris and the others that made the first episode fun to watch. Ill be honest with you it takes me a really long time to actually start to like programmes but i thought skins was great the first time i watched it and that was because of the cast. If they get a new cast i dont think im going to like it x

Honestly, I do think it's a good idea. I mean, what else could they do with these characters? Constant relationship break-ups/get-back-togethers get tiring after about the second time, and everyone's seeming to fit into their place.

I don't want to let go of these characters, but I feel it's better to. I just don't know how Series 3 will be as successful as Series 1 or Series 2, especially since the current actors started out not knowing it's success, and I feel like they're the creators of the show. They made the show, but it'll be interesting to see how the newcomers develop.

Sucks that I was just getting into Effy's character.

I think it's a great idea... I will really miss these characters... but the truth is, they get in sooooooooo much crap, if they make another season and they get into even more, it'll become extra-unbelievable.

I only really got into it as everyone had their own story and as good as the show was, they were just beginning and there's so much yet to be explored. But if the writers would find it easier to start from scratch, so be it.
