View Full Version : Do looks really matter.

in a soceity of perfect skin and a slender body i was wondering how many people on here judge people of how they look
Do looks count for you or do you go on personality?
I think looks do count to quite a large extent and it creeps into everyday lives without realising. Most people have a kid at school who is a tramp and smells worse than the sewers? People avoid those type of people like theres no tomorrow.

If we are talking about relationships, then I suppose there are different situations. You may be out in a bar/club and see someone and think "Oooh. They're a bit of allright". So looks are what first attracts you to them. You may chat to them and enjoy their personality, which can make the attraction stronger. However, they might be really boring, unfunny etc. This can lessen the initial attraction and change your feelings.
You can also meet someone who you don't find attractive at all, but once you get to know them, their personality can make the attraction grow.
I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. If it's for a one night stand then go for the looks. No seriously. You cannot base a relationship on looks alone. If you do, it will never work out.

The girl I am with at the moment did not stand out as the stunner in the crowd, as I am sure I did not. But we got talking and we made each other laugh. We just felt comfy together. That is the most important thing in my eyes.

For me looks dont matter but they can sometimes help. I dont judge anyone on their looks because often these things can be misleading. Like Baz said, first impressions on looks alone arent always what they are cracked up to be.
I go for intelligence and someone who makes me laugh and likes similar things to me.

Of course ! I mean, people actually should stop being hypocritical by saying 'only personality matters'. Nope it's wrong. Will you seriously be dating someone ugly or someone you do not find attractive ?
First you have looks and then personality when you go deeper.
Our societies make us think that looks matter with advertising. People who say 'Only personality matters' are more hypocritical because they spend a lot of time by buying new clothes and taking care of themselves.
But I do agree to say that personality can chance your mind on a person, but unless you are blind, you automatically make a judgement before talking to the person only based on the looks.

I think that subconsiouly (sp) we all go for looks initally. Looks do matter to me but that doesn't mean that everything else is disregarded. I could never be with some one stupid or ignorant for example no matter how estectally pleasing they are!

Looks obvioulsy matter but they are only part of the equation. Someone might have a great personality but you find physically repulsive. You cannot base a relationship on that either. It is finding the right balance in a person. And everyone is attracted to different people.
As I said, looks are not the be all and end all.

I never said someone did on that topic. But generally people say that. I don't find it right since they do the contrary.
And I agree with you, it's a balance, but do not deny it has a significant part in your choice. And I also said that 'then personality when you go deeper.' because unless the contrary, you don't the personality before knowing how this person looks like.

I have never denied that looks are part of the deal.
I have to disagree on one part though. You may meet someone and not be attracted to them. As you get to know them over time, your feelings may grow, and this can change your feelings and bring you to be attracted to that person.
I think looks matter but thats me. Like I might see a girl and say, omg she is hot. Its not like I'm going to say, oh she looks nice. So yeh they matter.

Of course, when you go deeper than the look. I mean, it's obvious lol But still, before you know someone, you find them unattractive. But that does not mean you cannot talk to them.

Hmmm. I am not sure you are understanding me correctly.
I am not talking about people you find unattractive. Impartial really. I am saying you may neither find them attractive or unattractive. After you get to know them, you find you have things in common and enjoy their company. This can change the way you feel and lead to a physical attraction. Basically, personality can have an effect on the way you are attracted to someone and change your feelings.
In this case, looks are not the defining factor as there was no physical attraction there at the beginning.

Basically what I'm trying to say that is in every day situations we avoid people based on how they look.
As for relationships, you want someone who people can be jealous of that you're with them but if you've got ten tonne Tanya as a girlfriend then people are just going to laugh at you. You want someone who you aren't embarrassed to be seen or associated with.
Personality counts, but IMO looks count even more.
Nicky.

Sort of..
Like coz if you see someone.. and they look like theyve been hit by the back end of a bus or somthing.. you aint gonna look twice at em ..
But If there in your school or in a club your in and they aint got the best of looks but you know them from around and about and you know there personality.. then maybe thats an exception.
Also, if you get meet someone online, you get to know their personality before you get to see them properly ( In person ) - even though you can see them on webcam.. sometimes its not the same.. x

Looks matter to me.
A LOT.
&this is coming from a male.
I won't leave the house unless I look good, my hair's decent, and i've got eyeliner on.
&that's a routine I've gotten into.
It literally takes me half an hour to get ready.
Looks give off first impressions, and can sum up a person so well.
I feel that the way I look and dress tells a person a lot about myself so I always make an effort.

I agree. I'm the same (except for the eyeliner bit) although I'm not like that 100% of the time. I either come in 2 forms, one being that I've got ready properly and I make sure I look as good as I could do and put effort in and the other way is complete tramp where I won't make any effort at all, just a quick shower then throw on jogging bottoms and other clothes then just go out. I don't ever look like one of those people who still looks quite bad yet looks like they've made an effort.

Of corse I clean my teeth/Face,Get dresed & eat. Other than that Im not realy obsesed of what I look like. Im not into fashion at all (I cant beer clothes shops (Mum byes my clothes)) so as long as Im clean Im fine...
Ps looks ARE NOT inportant, personality comes first.

See I'm the exact opposite. Call me shallow but looks mean alot to me thats why I hate my brace so much. I have 101 different products, I blow dry my hair every morning. I've been lucky that I haven't ever had many spots but besides from just having good skin that can be put down to drinking nothing but water for weeks, face masks and cleanser. I would be seriouly upset if I didn't look the best that I could. No one ever buys me clothes because they know that I will probably exchange it. lol

I think looks are much more importand. Anyway, I like all the big mouth show offs lol, but I know a few more really good looking girls who are caring and bubbly and funny. I like all personalities as long as their funny, loud and bubbly (And looooooove going outat night lol)
Me personally, I wouldn't be able to wear stuff thats just been thrown together. Apparently I take longest to get ready in the morning, but thats lies. My sister takes about 30 mins longer! I really love clothes, I just hate shopping for them, but I refuse for my mum to do it lol (Even though she doen't have a bad fashion sense, but still)

But what happens when you meet two girls and one has a lovely face but an ugly body and her friend has a lovely body but an ugly face?
Well swap the heads around (of course):laugh:
No seriously, most of us look for a boy or girlfriend who is nice and pretty looking when I met my first girlfriend which was at school I kept on saying how beautiful she was and that is what attracted me to her and her personaily was great to. But as cruel as it may sound if she wasnt good looking I would not have gone out with her.
My latest girlfriend is not as pretty as her but she certainly makes up for it in other ways

Looks can only work up to a point. If someone I like physically hasn't got an interesting personality to me, I would lose interest very quickly.
Well if somebody is ugly then it isn't their fault. But they should at least try and make themselves look presentable.
*mazedsalv**
29-04-2008, 06:09 PM
Well its quite rare that you find someone who looks really good and has an amazing personality, I would be looking for someone like that. But most people that are just a pretty face are dull and have no personality. Im not saying ugly but Im saying I would prefer someone who is just nice enough with a personality.
Sadly, in this world, yes. But I try not to let looks put me off people, as there are a lot of people who wouldn't be as good looking as others, but have an amazing personality, the way many good looking people happen to have lacking personalities. Having said that, there are also good looking people with great personalities and vice versa. It all depends on the person really.
I never used to care about my looks, but i am slowly being dragged in to the trap of vanity. lool. It takes me half an hour to do my hair =/ lol. Ahh well.
