Almost seven million people tuned in to watch 12 new contestants enter the Big Brother house at the start of this year’s show.

Big Brother 5 pulled in an average 6.7 million viewers and a peak audience of 7.2 million on its opening night.

Last year the launch programme drew an average audience of 6.9 million – its highest ever for a first night.

Friends and Big Brother last night earned Channel 4 its highest ratings so far this year, knocking Grand Designs and Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares off the channel’s the top spots.

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: “This was a fantastic night for Channel 4. We are thrilled that so many fans tuned in to say goodbye to Friends and that Big Brother has kicked off so strongly.”

After entering the Big Brother house last night housemates Stuart, Victor, Kitten and Marco stayed up talking until dawn about the meaning of love.

But all 12 housemates got a rude awakening on their first morning when they got a 9.32am alarm call.
