CELEBRITY Big Brother is set to make a sensational comeback after last year’s race row.

The reality show was axed by Channel 4 following the abuse of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty by Jade Goody and other contestants.

But replacement programme Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack was a ratings disaster — and bosses are looking to send a fresh batch of celebs into the house next January.

A Channel 4 source said: “We never said that Celebrity Big Brother would be gone forever.

“We wanted to give it a ‘time out’ — a resting period after all the friction and chaos of the Shilpa and Jade saga.”

The last Celebrity Big Brother saw Channel 4 rapped by TV watchdog Ofcom over the bullying of Shilpa, 32. Cops were called in and the station had to make an apology.

But bosses are set to give the high-profile show another chance.

They hope for a repeat of iconic scenes such as MP George Galloway acting like a cat and Michael Barrymore making his telly comeback dressed up as Adolf Hitler.

In 2006, the Big Brother brand netted Channel 4 £165million — a quarter of its advertising revenue.

The insider added: “Channel 4 can’t afford to let Celebrity Big Brother go — in the publicity or cash stakes.”

Last night a Channel 4 spokeswoman said “no final decision” had yet been made. Meanwhile, bosses are whittling down contestants for the ninth Big Brother series, which starts on June 5.

The ratings for Celebrity Hijack were at least 4 - 5 times higher than BB USA on E4 so it wasn't a ratings disaster.

Exactly. The series averaged 700,000, hardly anything on E4 apart from sometimes Hollyoaks beats that. It was the highest watched programme over 2008 and still is, I dont know how that is a disaster.

BBUSA at its highest got over 300,000, but averaged about 120,000, and recieved lows of 50,000.

Celebrity Big Brother is to return in 2009, reports claim.

The reality show did not air this year following the alleged racist bullying of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty by fellow housemates Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd in 2007.

Channel 4 was forced to broadcast three on-air apologies after Ofcom found that the series had breached the broadcasting code.

However, replacement E4 show Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack attracted ratings of only 600,000 and producers are now keen to return to the original format.

A Channel 4 insider told The Sun: “We never said that Celebrity Big Brother would be gone forever. We wanted to give it a ‘time out’ - a resting period after all the friction and chaos of the Shilpa and Jade saga.”

The series and its spinoff shows earned £165million for the channel in 2006, a quarter of its advertising revenue for the year.

The source added: “Channel 4 can’t afford to let Celebrity Big Brother go - in the publicity or cash stakes.”

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said “no final decision” had been made on the future of the show. .

its all well and good saying its going to be back, the problem is the housemates. They need better celebrities, ones that people have a actually heard of.

As much as I liked BBCH, I am so glad that CBB is back. It's just always something to look forward too, and I should think that after a year out, there will be multimple Zelebrities waiting to be picked to try and kick-start the career they once had!

The problem is that last year they didn't have any celebrities I knew that well. Shilpa Shetty is famous but not to the UK and I'd never heard of her until she went on CBB. Jamal Jackson; I'd heard of his brother at least. I'd heard of Jade Goody but only because she'd been on Big Brother. If CBB really wants to see high ratings, they need to get some BIG names on there! I'm talking Britney Spears, Nick Lachey, Brad Pitt, Matthew McConaughey, Vanessa Hudgens type people. These big name celebrities who people have actually heard of are the ones who will get a lot of viewers and high ratings.

I do like the celebrity series, occassionally but it kills the excitement for the proper series.

Does anyone else find it funny that C4 always claims they'll axe BB but then doesn't?

For example... they promised NO BB during January 2008, then they brought it up anyway. So what if it wasn't "Celebrity Big Brother?" It still had celebrities acting as BB. Now - surprise! - Celebrity Big Brother is back in its original format.

I'm glad these shows are back as I do love BB but to be honest I just don't understand why they would lie about it rather than saying from the start that yes they will have BB or that they are not sure yet if that is the case.

Gotta disagree there. I like how it keeps us going between the main BB series, and I also love the "picking up from where we left off" feel to the start of a CBB series in regards to the house.

It was stated that there would be no Celebrity Big Brother this year. I never remember them stating that there would be NO January BB.

Come to think of it, E4 announced that there would be an experimental January series at the same time that C4 axed CBB last year.
