Emma's mother talks to her local newspaper:

‘Big Brother won’t change my Emma’

THE proud mum of Oldham's first ever Big Brother contestant said the experience of being watched by millions would not change her down-to-earth daughter.

Emma Greenwood became the town’s newest celebrity on Friday when she entered the famous house to take part in the reality TV show.

For shocked grandparents Terry and Doreen Whelan watching at home in Failsworth, that was the first they knew of her plans.

The 20-year-old admin assistant usually resides at the family home in Chesney Avenue, Chadderton. She lives there with mum Karen, stepdad John Tuson, a firefighter with Mossley fire service, brother Lee, 21, who is in the Household Cavalry, and sister Kaley, aged nine.

Karen, 42, works with her daughter at a legal firm in Marple. She is pleased to see Emma is just being herself, and said: "Everyone who knows her would say that is Emma. She is very down to earth, always talking and laughing."

The former South Chadderton pupil found out she would be one of the 12 housemates just four weeks ago, after a lengthy process which started back in January when she attended open auditions in Manchester.

Karen said: "Emma was bored with work and was planning to go back to Spain, where she had worked as an entertainer."

"I told her to give the audition a try. She was called back the next day and over the next few weeks attended five interviews in London and had psychological tests."

"I thought it would be ideal for Emma, as she was bored with office work – normality doesn't really suit her! She always gets fired, after being in trouble for chatting and stopping other people working," said Karen. "She is easily distracted – all her school reports said that."

Emma originally went to St Augustine’s School, Werneth, but left to go to South Chadderton School after she was bullied because of her dyslexia.

Caring mum Karen said: "Emma will take it all in her stride, whatever happens. She has gone in that house just to have a laugh and I really hope she enjoys it."

Young Kaley is certainly enjoying seeing her big sister on television and has never been so popular at school. Karen herself is missing her eldest daughter, but admits Emma’s room has never been so tidy. "I miss her, as we are very close and tell each other everything. Our house definitely seems emptier – and quieter – without her."

My hero brother, by Big Brother Emma

REALITY television star Emma Greenwood really does care about Big Brother - her brave older brother Lee is a soldier just returned from Iraq.

The 20-year-old legal administrator from Oldham has become an overnight celebrity on the fifth series of Channel 4's Big Brother, which has seen a ratings slump from 7m viewers on the opening night to only 3.2m on Monday.

Until recently she was scouring the TV news bulletins for news about her brother Lee, 21, while he was at war in the Gulf with the Household Cavalry.

Now it is Lee who is watching the Channel 4 show with his pals at their barracks in Windsor, cheering her battle to win the programme's top prize.

He told the MEN: "When I was in Iraq Emma was watching the TV for news all the time. She was very worried.

"We've always been very close. Now I'm watching the TV to see how she's getting on. The lads have been winding me up a bit but I'm really pleased for her. She's doing really well."

Millions of people around the world are also watching Emma, who also has a sister, Kaley, aged nine.

But her mum Karen, 42, says she's sure the experience will not change her caring and down-to-earth daughter.

She said: "What you see on screen is the real Emma. Everyone who knows her would say `that's her'.

"She's always laughing and joking and she's a very caring person. She'll go out of her way to make all the other people in the house feel welcome."

But while Lee is regularly watching the show in Windsor, Karen is trying not to watch it so much at home.

She said: "I've been watching it all the time and it's become a bit of an obsession. I'm trying to cut down now."
