Reality TV has finished second to the atom bomb in a poll of the worst ideas of all time.

Almost a fifth of respondents, including 16 to 24-year-olds, named shows such as Big Brother as the worst ever innovation.

Capital punishment, plastic bags and the credit card rounded out the top five in the survey, conducted to mark Museums and Galleries Month.

The wheel topped the list of greatest ideas, followed by the internet, penicillin, equal rights for women and the Pill.

TV companies need TV reality to gain revenue and audience share. Tv companies cannot rely on episodic dramas and comedies for revenue as they're too expensive to make and the chances of landing a hit are slim at best. After reality TV Soaps are the TV companies biggest revenue earner because, like reality TV, they're cheap to make and have a loyal almost fanatical fan base. There may well be too much reality TV at the moment but that doesn't mean reality is bad TV.

Reality TV is here to stay and its about time TV snobs realised it.
