View Full Version : Big Brother made me realise I was epileptic!

Kate..
03-06-2008, 12:19 PM
I never knew I was epileptic uptin BB8 last year, right in the middle of the series when someone was evicted... I suddenly had an epeleptic fit. Freaked the life out of me it did!

According to my doctor it's quite mild but I still have to take a tablet every day.

Makes me chuckle every time I watch BB now :)

MR.K!

My brother is epileptic, its quite scary when he has a fit. I was home alone once with him when he had a fit it freaked the hell out of me.

Kate..
03-06-2008, 01:20 PM
Lol you lot are so much more scared than me!

No because the doctor said it's not strong, it's only a mild case, and as long as i take my pill there's only like 0.1% chance of me having a fit.

It's going to take more than that to stop me watching bb lol

What does Epileptic mean :S

is it a disease in africa?

Kate..
03-06-2008, 02:04 PM
LOL!

No it's where you have fits normally due to flashing lights.

Killian
03-06-2008, 02:18 PM
I have a very mild form of epilepsy (absence attacks), but it doesn't get provoked by flashing lights. I just have to take a tablet every day too. :spin2:

You can't say something offensive than palm it off as 'no offence'.

Seriously, being ditzy isn't 'funny' when you come out with something offensive.

'****' is short for spastic, which is a word used against disabled people. Read up. It helps you not be an offensive imbecile.

Are you for real? Not only is it offensive buts its also widely incorrect and you're way off the mark. A '**** attack' as you call it is, as Lauren said, to do with disabled people. An epileptic fit caused by flashing lights etc cause the brain to switch itself off then restart itself because it can't handle the electric activity. Epilepsy is not a disability.

Its nothing to joke about - when you know people who suffer with it it greatly affects your life as well, not just theirs. It seems a terrible thing to live with, I couldn't imagine being in so much fear.

Think before you post.

Like I said, the "ditzy" excuse just makes you look like an imbecile, not cool and funny.

Also, not everyone says it - just pathetic little children who don't know the actual meaning of it. Look beyond the school yard and understand real life problems. You said sorry, then validated the word '****' by saying everyone says it.

Okay, so you know the future - don't use any variation of the word **** to describe a disbaility, including spastic, ****zie, ******, retarded, tard... anything like that. It's not a scientific term and shouldn't be used to describe neither a mental nor physical disability.

It's a slang term used in bullying of disabled people. Much like the 'n' word for black people, except disabled people don't use it themselves either.

The word 'fit' would have sufficed.

Trust me, if somebody referred to me as a '****' due to my mild condition, I would be extremely offended. It's a rude, inappropiate and a word used far too loosely in modern society.

In this case you have pulled an 'Emily'.

No, I've not said my bit yet.

If everyone says ****, then I presume everyone knows the real meaning of it? Hmm. Thought not, they just have an image of someone in a wheelchair slapping their wrist and their tongue hanging out their mouth and probably use it as a derogatory term for someone. Not everyone says it at all, just people who are too immature to understand what its like and dealing with it.

When my bowling club went to a tournament in Sunderland (April 2007), one of my instructors collapsed on the way in. Then a few hours later she took an epileptic fit. I was really scared.

Lauren

Kate do you have to take the tablet everyday of your life now? You must be pleased it's not more serious, but sorry to hear you have it at all - quite an inconvenience.

I can't even imagine how scared you must've been when it first happened though, eek!

I cant remember which one of my friends had it, it wasnt that long ago(maybe a month). We were out, and all of a sudden she started shaking and breathing heavily. I cant believe I forgot who it was. I was really scared, there were about 16 of my friends there and we all helped her. Omg, it could of actually been a dream, but Im sure that it actually happened!

Kate..
03-06-2008, 03:44 PM
Thanks everyone else for your support, yeah I will have to take one every day of my life, the doctor says it might ware off but i'm too scared to take the risk.

Sometimes i forget, like at sleepovers and things, and I don't relax the whole day.

It could be worse, there is a bright side :) There always is :)

Awesome outlook :spin2:

My friend discovered her epilepsy when she had a fit in school when I was standing with her. I rang an ambulance and put her in the recovery position (cos she had blacked out too). She's been taking a pill for a few years now, and it becomes routine so it's no bother for her.

Spike
03-06-2008, 03:49 PM
Well at least you are still watching BB

You should watch the repeat of the eviction instead because the flashing lights are toned down.

Kate..
03-06-2008, 03:49 PM
Yeah you definately get used to it, but like i said, when there's no way of me taking one, like at sleepovers or when i run out for like a day, that day is incredibly scary for me. I know it's mild but I still get nervous!

The worst is when at school bulbs in the lights die down a bit and start flashing and when i ask the teacher to turn them off they sometimes say no and i don't want to have to tell them so then i just put my head on the table and refuse to move it.

Kate, why can't you take your medication at sleepovers? I've done so several times and it hasn't been a nuiscance. But I only take one in the morning and one at night, so I suppose it isn't that inconvenient. But it has gotten me into embarrasing situations. If I'm talking to someone I get an attack and sort of drift off. I come back and then I'm humiliated. Especially in school, if the teacher asks me a question.

And to the person above me, it's perfectly relevant. The flashing lights at live Big Brother evictions can be dangerous for people with epilepsy.

Wow now there's a problem! You must deal with it so well! Mine's only minor, I don't think i'm supposed to drink much but that's the only thing i tend to forget  but i never go overboard and i've never drunk more than one can since i found out.

Maybe it isn't obvious to you, so I shall point it out again. BIG BROTHER made her realise she was epileptic. BIG BROTHER. My friend suffered from epilepsy, and the first time she had a fit I was just in a state ofshock. She kept making strange noises and she hurt herself, luckily there was other people around. But since then I read up on it and knew exactly what to do if she ever had another fit.

I don't see her anymore though... :bawling:

LOL you div, symphony. Your whole post is void past that part. HAHAHAHA.
However, I shall tear apart your post at my will.

1) Symphony. LOL! Read a dictionary instead of getting het up at a post.
2) This is a BB9 forum, as you point out - HOWEVER, it's not a BB9 NEWS forum. Just BB9 forum. Anything that is relevant to BB9 goes in here, and Kate's story is relevant to BB9, since it's her plight of epilepsy since BB.
3) Who are you to tell the mods how to do their job? If they thought it was in the wrong forum they would've moved it. They haven't - so respect their choices.
4) Why would Kate want symapthy (which is, by the way, the correct spelling!)? She's not a HM, she has nothing to gain from getting sympathy. Why would someone WANT sympathy?
5) You're confusing sympathy and empathy. Likewise with my other point, read a dictionary. I think what you're referring to is empathy, why is the ability to empathise with someones situation, rather than sympathise with.
6) Who are you to dictate what someone needs to know? People obviously were interested, as they replied.
7) You were obviously interested, as you replied.
8) Everyone is too sensitive? You're the one amassing a high number of exclamation marks simply cos someone posted something which you didn't particularly find interesting because it didn't fill the void in your interaction-less life.
