Mario is a sly bastard, always trying to make other housemates look bad. He misinterpreted what Darnell said, then wouldn't stop pulling him up about it. Pr*ck!

I actually thought Darnell was completely misinterpreted. However, I won't defend him too much considering he explained himself in the last segment of the highlights show. I could understand where he was coming from with what he was saying, whilst I thought Mario was excessively sensitive.

Mario was obviously the one speaking sense, i was half expecting Darnell to blurt out, "you don't know what i've been through!". He's got that 'victim card', no doubt he'll use it in the future again.

It's almost like Mario thinks he can win any situation by pretending he has experience in that field.
Darnell was voted most musical housemate. Mario needed to shut up and listen for a change.

Well he didn't use it in that argument. Whether you expected him to or not is irrelevant and since this thread is about 'that' argument, I don't see how it matters either.

Darnell responded: "You’re a beast, man! Why would you make me feel like that? You don’t wanna go to those places with me because you’ll look like a fool. You don’t know the problems I go through."

So now you think he DID use the victim card? Earlier you said you just expected him to!
I don't think he used the victim card. I think he's a nice guy that sometimes speaks before he really thinks about it. It was a throwaway comment.
If you think he was using the victim card, fair enough but I didn't. It seems you are pulling him up over nothing to prove an awkward point.

The thing is i proved my point without even knowing the facts to begin with, it was clearly him playing the victim card again. I actually quite like Darnell, he's depressing though. I was interested the first couple of times he was talking about the problems he's had to face but i get the feeling he won't shut up about how hard a life he's been through. We get the point.

Darnell mentioned he wanted to be the type of leader that doesn’t argue and lets people do what they want- Mario accused him of not letting people play what they wanted and it hit a nerve.
I presume that’s what he meant by ‘you don’t know the problems I have’. To be honest though, he could have meant anything by it, you just presumed he was playing the victim card.
I find he has a tendency to waffle- probably didn’t even mean it to sound like that. In my opinion that isn’t ‘playing’ the victim card. It’s not like he’s actively playing that angle, so I disagree.
And I haven’t once heard him try to get sympathy that way. He seems to keep it bottled up. To be honest, I wouldn’t blame him for mentioning it occasionally, he probably has had a difficult life. That’s just my take on things…

It's not ok though, i would have no problem accepting your opinion on say, you're opinon of a housemate. This is completely different though, you have a problem accepting that he uses the victim card, when it's as clear as day that he does.
When you try to use different words like you did above with the words he actually said, it is even more obvious.

I didn't say you're not allowed an opinion. You changed the words on what he said to argue your point, ignoring the facts to base your opinion on something is pure ignorance. You changed the quote and it's words knowing that the proper quote does not go along with your view, why would you do that? Simple, it is ignorance.

Ok, fair enough.
I didn't get the wording wrong on purpose though, I don't see how that differance would mean anything anyway?
I think Darnell says a lot of things without thinking. I don't think he was trying to play the victim card at all- I can see why you think that but I don't think he knows a lot of what he says- sometimes he just seems to go into autopilot when he's speaking! I just don't think he's the type to use it. He doesn't seem like a manipulator, I think he's really genuine so far.
It's just a differance of opinion, no big deal. Just keep the insults in check. You can disagree with people and still be civil.

Pointing out someone is being ignorant is not an insult. Infact, it's imperative to the nature of debate that one is allowed to highlight when someone is attempting monkey-shines such as rewording quotes.
The rules say insults are not allowed, I didn't read anywhere when I signed up that the people who run the site can invent new definitions of words and concepts (such as what is an insult) incase a newbie starts winning an argument.

You should be able to prove the posters ignorance via arguments that relate to the houseguests and the game, as opposed to directly saying "you're ignorant". A good debater would know this! :D
And I would define insult as anything negative said about a person...and I wouldnt quite call ignorant a positive.
SexualHeroics
16-06-2008, 09:49 AM
So in that case anything negative said against a person, their ability to argue and therefore their argument is insulting them, so you're basically painting yourselves into a corner making it against the rules to prove other peoples arguments wrong. When someone rewords quotes to suit their argument there is no other option but to pull them up on it.

I think Darnell's intentions were right, I think his wording was poor. I think Mario understood what Darnell was saying but took the opportunity to act all indignant just because he can. I am not a huge Mario fan but do think that Darnell needs to be more careful when talking to people like Mario who will happily mi-interpret what he has said.

I didn't agree with either but of the two Darnell made more sense. Mario doesn't seem to like anyone telling him that he may, some time down the line, not be right. He's totally oversensitive and doesn't strike me as much of a team player unless he's in charge. I think it's one of the reasons why I think he'll be up again this week.

I mistakenly stated the quote wrong but I don't see how it made any difference to my argument?! I did already mention that. Bit pedantic to keep mentioning it as if it was a major part of my argument. How it's worded makes no differance-
I already explained why I don't think Darnell uses the victim card. The poster seemed to have a problem accepting my opinion- calling me ignorant and being really patronising.

I wasn't purposely trying to highlight your mistake Matt, it was just part of the point I was making that headaball was making a good argument and you wouldn't back down with the misquoting issue. If I'm being honest I think you kind of brought it on yourself when he gave you the piece of constructive criticism about being ignorant in this case, but then headaball was the one apprehended by the moderator, which wasn't right. Again, my main point was not to make a big deal about your mistake, it wasn't that major.

If I'm being honest I think you kind of brought it on yourself when he gave you the piece of constructive criticism about being ignorant in this case, but then headaball was the one apprehended by the moderator, which wasn't right. Again, my main point was not to make a big deal about your mistake, it wasn't that major.
Back down? I told him it was a mistake! If you read what I put about Darnell, you’ll see it doesn’t effect my argument anyway.
And it was fair that he was warned. He was warned in another thread but continued to be patronising and calling me ignorant in this thread.

Which brings it to the main point I was making. You think it's fair someone was warned because they were being patronising and called you ignorant, but the problem is you were being ignorant to the sympathy card issue, which Darnell was clearly playing, as headaball pointed out. It's not right for you to expect moderator protection just because you're being beaten fair and square in an argument, but you obviously think otherwise. Sadly you got it, probably because you're a popular member and the other guy's a newb, which is why I felt the need to stick my nose in, because I would be annoyed if the same had happened to me.

Actually, I don't think I am particularly popular. That would be a silly justification anyway, the mods always treat people equally, regardless of when they signed up. I have had the occasional telling off too.
Also, I don't believe he was using the 'victim' card and I argued my side of it. That doesn't make me ignorant. Looking at Darnels personality, I don't believe he was using it (if you read back you will see my arguments there).
On the modding issue again, I think it comes down to discretion. It's not only what you say but how you say it. He was being overly patronising and aggressive- there was no need to be that way.
