Press Release:

TASK: JAPANORAMA
TX: Highlights show, 10pm, Wednesday 18th June, 2008

For this week's shopping task, housemates will learn and be tested on traditional Japanese culture.

Today, housemates woke up to find the living room transformed Japanese style, with low dining tables, futon seating and lantern style lighting. Later today, Big Brother will tell the housemates that this week's shopping task will consist of several challenges that will teach and test them about Japanese culture. These are:

" KARATE SCHOOL
" ENDURANCE KARAOKE
" LEARNING JAPANESE
" CHOPSTICK CHALLENGE

Housemates must decide there and then who will take part in each part of the task. Each housemate must take part in one task only which they cannot change.

Big Brother will give kimono's to all housemates apart from those taking part in the Karate Challenge who will wear karate costumes. Housemates have to wear their costumes for the duration of the task.

The housemates who take the Karate School challenge will be given an instructional manual and DVD plus DVD player. They will have four hours to learn their karate routine which they must perform, from memory, infront of the other housemates.

For the Endurance Karaoke challenge, five housemates will go to the small task room which will be transformed into a karaoke booth. The five housemates must work in shifts over 24 hours to make sure that at all times someone is in the karaoke booth singing 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' by Bonnie Tyler.

The three housemates who have chosen the Learning Japanese challenge will be will be provided with a personal CD player and headphones, a "Japanese For Beginners" audio CD and a "Japanese For Beginners" phrase book. Housemates have until the following day to improve upon their conversational Japanese. Big Brother will call them to the Diary Room to take part in an oral exam on Wednesday Morning.

Housemates will also be provided with a Japanese banquet of Shashimi (thinly sliced raw seafood).

The task will conclude on Wednesday where housemates will be tested on their conversational Japanese and their chopstick techniques.

Article from channel4.com/bigbrother:

The housemates are about to star in Japanorama...

Shock! The housemates have woken up this morning to find the living room decked out Japanese-style with low dining tables, futon seating and lantern-style lighting. They're about to turn Japanese for this week's Shopping Task, where each of the housemates will have to try a tricky Japanese art or skill.

They'll either have to learn Japanese (Big Brother will test them with an oral exam), take part in a chopstick challenge (where they'll fish noodles out of a bowl), attend karate school (and learn a self-defence routine) or test their vocal stamina with endurance karaoke (and sing Total Eclipse Of The Heart around 8,749 times!)

Still, at least they'll receive a banquet of sashimi (thinly-sliced seafood). And you never know - maybe one of them will learn enough Japanese to decipher the third of three Japanese signs in the garden, which reads:

'IF YOU STAND ON THIS SPOT ON ONE LEG AND BARK LIKE A DOG, YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY WIN A LUXURY SHOPPING BUDGET FOR THE GROUP'

Lets hope nobody loses their Tempura!

I love that part - I wonder if they'll translate the sign

The housemates divide up the Japanorama Tasks...

Luke and Alexandra read out the Task sheet to the group earlier, getting a chorus of cheers for karaoke and a gasp when it was revealed that "only people who cannot use chopsticks" would be allowed to take part in the chopstick challenge.

"I'm doing that!" demanded Alexandra when the karate Task was mentioned.

But the housemates were thrown into panic when it was revealed that they only had fifteen minutes to decide who was doing which Task?

"If you're good at chopsticks, do that," advised Lisa loudly.

So the housemates who can't use chopsticks are going to be the ones that are good at them? Hmmm, logical.

"We've got fifteen minutes," Luke worried, "so Dale, come and put your name down, because you said you were semi-okay with chopsticks."

"Mario, you should do the karate chop," Alexandra decided, "because you'll probably have the most potential of chopping through a board. Mikey, you should learn Japanese."

Rex said he'd studied karate for a year but clamed he wouldn't be a good choice, announcing: "I remember **** all!"

And when it was revealed they would be getting costumes including geisha costumes for the girls, Sylvia squealed excitedly and hugged Bex.

The group kept changing their minds over who should do what, until Luke insisted, "We haven't got time!" and read out the groups.

It was finally decided that Mohamed, Kat and Mikey were going to be learning Japanese, Luke, Mario and Rachel would do the chopstick challenge, Rebecca, Sylvia, Dennis, Darnell and Alexandra would sing their lungs out in endurance karaoke, Jennifer, Lisa and Rex would learn karate and Dale would do the karate chop.

OMG! Finally I can talk about this task! ...

My dad's friend was contacted by the Big Brother production team last week as he sells Japanese ornaments/furniture/etc. They loaned stacks of stuff off him and took it all in vans, wrapped up in bubble rap and stuff.

He was made to sign this contract thingy sayiing that basically he wasn't allowed to tell anyone about it, but obviously he did tell some people :D

I was sooo tempted to tell you lot before the task had started but was dead worried bout Big Brother not using his stuff if people found out.

Anyway I'm gunna buy some of the stuff off him when it comes back, how cool is that! Having Japanese furniture thats been in the Big Brother 9 house!!!

Dough! Someone's mucked up brekkie...

In a well-intentioned attempt to save rations, Alexandra had offered to cook breakfast for all the housemates this morning. Instead, she ended up cooking up an argument with Rachel.

Despite Alexandra having told the house her culinary plans yesterday, Rachel got up early and heated four tins of spaghetti for hungry early-risers. When Alexandra saw the pan of cold, leftover food, she was not impressed. And with rations so low, who can blame her?

"You asked me last night what I was going to do," she told Rachel, who was doing the dishes.

"People wanted spaghetti on toast this morning..." Rachel defended herself.

But Alexandra was more interested in the wasted food. "Yeah, but did you have to cook it all? All four tins?"

"Rex and I thought people could reheat it," explained Rachel,
looking anxious. "I'm not gonna argue with you Alex."

"I'm not gonna argue with you, you're not worth it," came the angry response. The pair then went back to ignoring each other in the kitchen... but Alexandra wasn't going to let it go.

"Darnell, I'm cooking breakfast for those who haven't had. People have interfered with the major plan, because they're dumb," Alexandra said loudly as Rachel continued to wash up. When Jennifer and Dennis came in they got Alexandra's version as well.

"It's minging, putting on loads of spaghetti and reheating it. That's how tramps live. What's the point? Should've just waited for me to make breakfast as planned from Monday. Doesn't demonstrate common sense, does it?"

Rachel soon headed to the bathroom where she sat looking tearful. Dennis had a few words of support: "I'm not eating her ******* dough balls anyway."

But unusually, Alexandra has some support. Mario, Luke and Lisa talked it over in the bedroom, and decided Alexandra had a point. "It's her kitchen as much as anyone else's," reasoned Mario.

You know what they say: too many cooks spoil the breakfast...
