View Full Version : Should the age limit on sex be reviewed?
Ok this is quite a serious topic so dont let it get heated.
Lets face it most people lose their virginity before the age of 16, probably the same with alot of the TIBB members so should the age limit be abolished, as long as you are safe and use precautions then i can't see no reason why not, its a pointless law that at this moment in time is practically being ignored by teenagers everywhere.

No, I don't think that under 16's should be allowed to have sex. If anything, it should be raised to 18.

Abolishing it also affects laws such as statutory rape though, which is a serious issue. If it's abolished completely then it means that a 55 year old man can legally have sex with a 14 year old girl, for example.

I don't think that lowering/raising the consent age for sex would be taken into consideration by the majority of teenagers. I think most people had sex not thinking "Ooh, I'm breaking the law".
However, I think it's important to have an age of consent for two important reasons. One, it gives young people the impression that sex is an important thing, and although some choose to 'be rebellious' and have sex before the age, it needs to be there as a reminder to everyone that people shouldn't have casual sex under 16.
Secondly, paedophilia, for obvious reasons.
But going deeper into that, I'm not sure what to think. Because, say, a 17 year old has sex with a 15 year old...is 2 years necessarily a big difference? Because it would be in terms of legality. And let's face it, there's some more mature 15-yos than there are 18yos.
But on the whole, I think the majority of 18yos are more mature and able to make a decision on sex than 15yos.
Yeah, it would make the laws concerning rape very blurred especially with girls below the age of about 15.

why though, its done no harm to me as long as you use protection of some kind then there no issue with it. Although just to clear it up im not someone thats just been sleeping around with everyone as it appears to be the stereotype for everyone that done it under age, ive been in a long term relationship since April last year and i think that if you can last that long in a relationship then why not have sex?

Its a subject like the Euthanasia topic, and my feelings are the same, a change in the law will open up abuse, and we have to much of that already .......simple answer NO WAY.

well theres a line between rape and having willing sex maybe they should change it so that any persons under the age of 18 can willingfully have sex with each other but for example a 55 year old can not legally have sex with a 14 year old girl

Yes, but then there's the whole complication of people saying "she was willing to have sex" when 'she' wasn't. And I don't think people under the age of 14 are able to make that decision.

But that counteracts your point. Just cos the law is in place doesn't mean people will follow it.

True Lauren close friendships can blossom to great romances that can last years, but most of those are based on a good foundation of respect.
Take all our current HM's, Alex 15 = baby un married god knows where the father is boy friend in prison
Jennifer 21 baby now split with husband
Stuart 25, un married one kid claim he may have more but, "dosnt really know" or seem to care.
Combined age of 61 with NO partners and another 3 (at least) babies to set the trend again, god knows where that will be when they get to 'maturity'
Basic requirements of a relaitionship are time respect honesty and planning, none can be expected or capable for someone still in school.
That's without the sex..... then there is lowering the age, I can see every paedophile in the world cracking open the champagne now.
I dont have a perfect solution I just recognise this very very bad one.

I think it should be risen. I would make more sense to have drinking at 16 at sex at 18. Not that it really matter because at the end of the day the majority of modern day teens, it wouldn't even cross their minds that they were, in fact, breaking the law.

Awww thankyou very much Lauren that means alot to me
I think the issue that alot of young relationships have these days is that there arent mature and keep secrets or want to sleep around with others.
Thats something that me and my girlfriend dont have. We are very mature around each other we dont hold secrets we are open and honest with each other and tell each other what we think, although its got the point where we know what each other is thinking now and also we both get along with each others families very well, we are always around her house and her mum and dad are very aware that we have sex and they dont mind as they though its not a spare of the moment relationship even though i was underage when i lost my virginity to her we were in a loving trusting relationship which is not based entirely on sex , sex is just a bonus for us and its a way of showing how much we really do love each other.
Now i believe that shows the grounds of a good, strong relationship that i hope will last.
Also I do disagree with people that just sleep around with people for the sake of it, i believe sex should be part of a relationship.

i dont really consider an age to be acceptable, i think its whenever you are ready some people feel ready at 14 some others feel ready at 16. As long as both people involved feel happy with what they are doing an are using contraception then i personally dont think there is any reason why they should not

I tend to agree, although it was his immature attitude evan at 25 (the oldest of the 3 I mentioned) that was my point.
I guess I'm out of touch my daughters 22 has a job/career lives at home and wants to leave home when she has a foundation to be in a proper relaitionship and stability in order to bring kids into the world wanted and loved.
I guess anything other than that would seem really dumb, but as i say maybe I got this wrong too.
Kids lets lower the age to 10, lets finish school to, hell lets elect kids at 11 to make the laws.... only people gonna cheer loudest are peodophiles when it comes to youngsters having sex.

It's an interesting topic (Thanks for bringining it up). While I don't agree with the current limit I can't find an age limit I do agree with but all I do know is that it definetly shouldn't be lowered. But with any lage there would have to be loop holes with that law. Because like Shaun said earlier, if some one who's 16 has sex with a 15 year old are they really breaking the law. Look at the situation with Jamie Lynn Spears' boyfriend (I know they're not exactly a poster child for teen sex!). He almost faced rape charges because in that state's law she was too young but he wasn't but there was only a year in the difference!
But in most situations it really depends on the people involved.
im not saying remove the law to encourage sexaul behaviour more im just saying that the law is not being obeyed by a high proportion of teenagers so why have it if it has no effect on what teeagers do

The current age is 16 and young people are having sex. If you lower it,will people be having sex at an even younger age and learning about it at an even younger age?
Isn't there enough pressure to grow up as there is ?

It need to be there for all the others that it does stop. Lets not forget the risk of pregnancy. Lowering or abolishing it would raise the amount of teen pregnancy which doesn't need to be any higher than it already is.

Wow! I had sex ed when I was 11 too but it was extremly vague. It's 17 in Ireland which I think is better than 16. Having a limit is never going to stop people have underage sex. But it should be there. Young people need a bit of guideage about when you should be mature enough to do certain things like have sex. And it prevents old perverts getting away with sleeping with innocent young girls. I'm probably making no sense...

yes this thread has definately opened my mind to views about the topic i never thought of before, its clear that abolishing the age limit is a clear no go and that making it higher or lower will simply will not work, but whatever we do youngsters will continue to haver sex, but one thing we can all agree on im sure is that its there to protect young girls from falling in to traps of 40 year old perverts, am i right?

Spot on honey, and at least you have the maturity here to have made plans for your future, I only hope that care and good intentions are well rewarded and happy for you.
Even if they do go wrong at least you have sincerely thought about the prospects of the future.
I wish you and your partner a happy life together. [/quote]
awww i really appreciate that, that means alot to me thankyou for your support

yes this thread has definately opened my mind to views about the topic i never thought of before, its clear that abolishing the age limit is a clear no go and that making it higher or lower will simply will not work, but whatever we do youngsters will continue to haver sex, but one thing we can all agree on Im sure is that its there to protect young girls from falling in to traps of 40 year old perverts, am i right?
Why is the focus only on girls. A guy has just as much a risk of that happening!
No. People will do it before they are 16 (ie 14/15) but if the age was lowered to say 13 then people would start at about 10/11 and that would just be plain wrong.
The age is there for a very good reason- its when most people reach physical maturity but even at 16 some people aren't mentally ready for any consequences that might happen. Some people also aren't aware.
16 is the right age I think. You'll see it once you've passed the age of 16- I thought it was a pointless law up until then.
