Left handed, even though when I started school at 4 the teacher I had used to slap me trying to get me to use my right hand. That was until my dad went up to the school and threatened to slap her if she laid a finger on me again lol!! Her reasoning by the way was that all left handed people were sent by the devil....no i'm serious. She was a nun and thought anything that was a bit different was sent by the devil!!

How long ago was this, and how long did you have to suffer before your father intervened?

you'd think the church/school would screen out nutters like that ... lol or maybe they just "move them on" like they do with naughty priests from one church to the next.:cloud:

I was 4 so that would make it 1986. It went on for quite a while as I wouldn't tell my parents, being too scared I suppose, but a friend of mine told her mother and it went from there. It was just me though this woman hit all the kids in the class unless their parents were rich. They got away with it in those days even though it wasn't all that long ago.

i agree but sadly, even in the 80's they wern't veiwed as 'nutters'. Alot of the teachers, nuns or not, hit the kids in their class. The principle just turned a blind eye.

I'm left handed & got that too on a less extreme scale (no slapping) from a primary school teacher (Miss Garlic ).

No coincidence she was also one of those devoutly religious types too, big fat old nutjob that she was, gawd bless her.

Yeah there are some people who should just not be allowed to teach kids. Alot of the nuns teaching in our school would not even have had any official teacher training, thet were nuns and that was good enough for the state.

So did he try and approach the head teacher first before threatening the teacher concerned?

Nowadays the father would get into trouble for threatening behaviour.

I find it incredible that this attitude was there as late as the 1980's. I wonder if there are any left handed children out there in our schools still suffering.

A friend of mine from Korea indicated that in Korea it still goes on and from the sound of her voice agreed with it, if I read them correctly. It is considered a matter of shame if the child is left handed at school there, because it means the parents did not care to correct their child.

This is a blind generalisation of a WHOLE nation WOW!! ... ALL based on ONE conversation with ONE Korean which you admit you may not have read correctly. Nice work!!

Re "Nowadays the father would get into trouble for threatening behaviour. "
I think nowadays a teacher HITTING a child would get you into trouble TOO so don't worry about hanny08's dad. We need to keep on eye out for crack pot churchy types who think they alone have God on their side... not fathers who defend their daughters.

Of course we are !
Today, a man at Uni while writing on the blackboard said 'Sorry I don't write well, I'm a left-handed man' and I was like 'What the hell ? Being left-handed is not an excuse, we are like everybody else.'

The bit about reading them right was the bit where they seemed to agree with what went on in their culture, rather than what they said went on in their culture. Since I do not have access to other Korean nationals at this time, I have no other way of verifying if this is general across South Korea, so have to rely on their testimony.

I did not forget about the teacher hitting the child bit, which is why I said I found it incredible, I was comparing what went on then with attitudes today. If it happened today, and physical punishment was inflicted by the teacher, the correct procedure would be to lodge a complaint with the police and the school authorities. If no physical assault had been done by the teacher, then lodge a complaint with the head teacher or the LEA.

Physically going to confront the teacher would, in today's climate would be counter productive and give the teacher the moral high ground, especially when there are other avenues.

No he didn't approach the head teacher. As far as he was concerned it had nothing to do with her. He's actually a very quiet man, but he will not tolerate any harm to his family. He would never have actually hit the woman, never in a million years but his sheer size(he's a big man) and the threat was enough to put her off laying a finger on me again. The thing is, if he had gone to the principle , absolutely nothing would have been done and like other parents who did try it this way, he would have been told it was none of his concern how the school was run. I know that sounds strange, but this was the attitude then

all office-speak and weasel words ... you work in some goverenment beucracy....I'm sure of that.

"I have no other way of verifying if this is general across South Korea, so have to rely on their testimony."
WRONG you don't have to ... their "testimony" isn't their nation's. .... logically you don't " have to rely on their testimony" and in so doing tar them all with the same brush...infact you NEED to because it fits in with a racist idea that is already embedded in your head...an idea that you need to bolster with illogical assumptions.
Understand? So then don't stereotype a WHOLE NATION based on anecdotal evidence. That's THE worst evidence there is when talking about generalisations ... use some stats man! In fact I notice lots of you evidence is anecdotal..."a Muslim said this to me... a McDonalds cashier said that." This is a great way to build a very weak foundation for your arguments ... it's not LOGICAL!!.
It's why I keep accusing you of racism. Logically ... what ONE person of a race/nation/religion say or does ISN'T enough to make wild stereotypical judgements on all of them yet you seem to do it all the time. Logically it makes no sense so the only other thing that could be motivating you Sticks is "fear of the other"....you supposed to be a christian Sticks!!
for the n-th time "member a told ya!"
If your planning an defending yourself on this one please answer these directly and not with office-speak.

ange7, why do you keep attacking people and being rude on this and other topics on this forum. Have you read the rules of the forum?

"1. Treat other forum members with respect, no insults. *Important*"

http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/forum/faq.php?page=forumrules

If you don't start treating other members of this forum, and their viewpoints, with respect you'll be banned from posting.

I said Sticks is wrong for taring a whole nation with the same brush based soley on ONE conversation. It doesn't make sence... he does repeatedly ...what is motivating it?... it's not logic... it must be coming from somewhere else.

How is that OFFENSIVE.... spell it out James.

JAMES you are going to have to explain EXACLTY where I insulted Sticks .... please show EXACTLY what was offensive. What was the "ATTACK" that your on about?
I've seen members ( not talking about sticks here) inciting religious/racists and sexist hate REPEATEDLY ... so I checked to see how many warnings they had in the past.... ZERO!!! These are the real attacks mate ... but no ... your on the ball!

But you seem to want to red card me .....FOR WHAT? Spell it out mate.... how was this post offensive?

Ange, although I cannot speak for James I'd like to explain from my viewpoint why he may have posted that.

Although you're not directly insulting towards members, often you come across as passive aggressive (If you want a direct example: "you supposed to be a Christian Sticks") that may not seem offensive to you - but will cause offence to the person you're directing it towards.

Although I'm not asking you to walk on eggshells, it may be worth ensuring you're not coming across as too aggressive and challenging towards members when in debate.

ange7, you are always making digs at people on here and criticising their character based on the opinions they hold, not just in this thread but in many other recent posts.

By all means, criticise an opinion if you disagree with someone, just don't criticise the person. That is all I am asking.

Anyway, I am right-handed...

This is why I like forums...people have some wild ideas in their heads ... but they need them tested to see if those ideas holds water or not. If I lose a debate then I'll change my mind on the subject, I don't feel as though it's a personal attack against ME. I don't see my ideas as who I am... they are changeable and if on testing my opinions in an open forum they should fail then it's just time to find a new way to argue that point or to drop it altogether. Clearly some people here don't debate and take everything personally and so are offended. My questioning of Spicks's Christianity wasn't meant as a back-door argument that was designed to side stepped all his LOGIC ...no it was a call to him judge himself by his own standards before he jumps to prejudging and stereotyping a whole country. It shouldn't be an offence to ask someone to live up to their own ideals that they so readily measure others.

And by "other posts" hope you don't mean Robb and xxshortyxx !!! lol ... they were caught out in some wild out and out lies and it took 5 post to each of them before they admitted they lied. It was only a drawn out affair because their pride wouldn't let them own up to some pretty ridiculous whoopers. Is pointing out a lie offensive?

From now on I won't directly refer to any members in my post when I'm arguing a point....

Instead of "hey robb.. your a liar, that was BS" I'll say "I disagree but please don't report me!"
When Andyman say that all Muslims are secretly conspiring to take over England and it's time for England to wake up... I wont see that as an incitement to religious hate crimes .. I'll take you advice and not be too passionate.
When skattersmum says that Sara, and flirts like her, not only deserved what they get but deserve a whole lot more ....to fix them.... I won't see that as her inciting a RAPE as some kind of lesson or punishment....I'll just giggle and hope I'm not reported
