New Harry Potter movie pushed back

Muggles, get ready for some bad news: There will be no Harry Potter movie this year.

In a surprise move, Warner Bros. has moved back the release date of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" from Nov. 11 to July 17, 2009.

In a statement, Warners president Alan Horn said part of the reason for the shift was the writers strike, which left the studio in a bit of a dearth of tentpoles.

"Like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films-changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of," he said. "We agreed the best strategy was to move 'Half-Blood Prince' to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer."

The studio had hoped to have movies like super-hero group "JLA" ready for the summer season, though that movie ultimately was delayed indefinitely.

Warners released the last Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," July 11, 2007, and it became the second-largest entry from the series after the first movie.

I read this on a forum just a second ago, I cant believe it! There reason is pathetic!
But atleast it means next year we get 2 films at once. Then we have to wait another year for the second half of the last film, pshhh.

I don't get why they've did it, the film's as good as finished and they never are as profitable in the summer as tehy are in the winter.

It's a very foolish move.

Of course they are. That's why the film has been pushed back, for money purposes. The press release (although not as blunt) says that.

Oh and I just realised that now we have to wait 11 MONTHS until it comes out.

The film its self is finished, and edited together, its just being put on the shelf because warner brothers have nothing else to release during the summer of '09 because their writers are on strike.

There is talk on other forums that it should leak before then, as there is a finished version somewhere hidden. Also I cant see why they cant release it this year in England, things could change you never know. But I doubt we are going to have to wait!

actually the Dealthy Hallows Part 1 comes out in November 2010 then Part 2 in May 2011

If my memory serves there has only been two Harry Potter films released in Summer (POA and OOTP). If I remember right POA had the lowest gross of any HP film and OOTP did well. It's a lot riskier in Summer since there's more competition.

It would have made more sense releasing it in November as it wouldn't have any of competition for a few weeks until Quantum of Solace came out. I'll be surprised if HBP does as well as it's predecessors as the mystique and hype about the series has kind of ended since DH came out. HBP will do well but not as well as the other films when Pottermania was in full swing.
