That's absolutely awful! It's these sorts of horror stories that really put me off planes, even though the stories may be few and far between.

RIP to all those who died in the crash, and I can't imagine what a difficult time this must be for their families.

News from BBC:

At least 45 people have been killed after a passenger plane swerved off the runway at Madrid's Barajas airport, Spanish officials say.

Many others were hurt when the Spanair plane bound for Gran Canaria left the runway with 166 passengers and six crew on board, just after 1445 (1245 GMT).

There were reports of a fire in the left engine during take-off. TV footage showed smoke billowing from the craft.

Helicopters and fire trucks were called out to dump water on to the plane.

Dozens of ambulances went to the scene, and TV footage later showed several people being carried away on stretchers.

Am I the only person on earth who loves flying and airports no matter how many terrorist attack threats and crashes I hear about. I should get my self checked :(

But I do feel for anyone who lost anyone on the crash and also anyone who is hurt. Oh yeah, and don't worry MR.K!, plane travel is still the safest way to get about :)

Dozens of people were feared dead after a Spanish airliner crashed on take-off from Madrid airport.

The MD80 jet swerved off the runway and burst into flames. As emergency services surrounded it estimates of the death toll ranged from 45 up to 150.

Police said 164 people, including two babies had been on board Spanair flight JK5022 bound for Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.

The Spanish government said 45 people had been confirmed dead with another 19 seriously injured.

Other reports in Spanish media said only a handful of passengers escaped the crash.

An official with the Madrid emergency rescue service SAMUR said crews were removing bodies and injured people from the plane.

"It is catastrophe," he said.

Some observers said one of the left engines caught fire as the plane accelerated for take-off causing it to swing off track.

Airport fire services were at the scene of the crash in minutes.

The last major Spanish air accident was in Bilbao in 1985 when 148 people died as their airliner crashed approaching the city's airport.
