With a spectacular end to the Beijing 2008 Games, do you think its right that the games should be held in the U.K?
Personally I'm against this for many reasons;
I don't think will we deliver, we promised so much for these games and already, Venues have had to be changed, costs gone up, building been delayed and who knows what else, compared to Beijing they have had little problems compared to what problems we have had.
We're in 2008.
It's in 2012, obviously alot of changes are going to be made. I don't think we'll here anything 'official' till about 2010 personally.
I think we should host it as we have done spectacular in Beijing.
I'm really proud to be having the games. I expect bejing had problems, just we did not hear that much about it.
No way, I'd be suprised if the Stadiums even built by 2012
It's going to be a hard act to follow, yes. But like commentators have said, we'll have our own take on the Olympics.. which could just be code for "our budget is lower so we're going for a cheaper alternative". I'm proud and excited that GB is hosting the olympics and I think far too many people are negative about something so good.

I was watching a show the other night and I didn't realise how many problems the Beijing olympics faced. it was nearly cancelled on a few times so it doesn't really matter that we are facing a few problems.
We have 4 years to get ready for the 2012 olympics and I think we will deliver. Can't wait for 2012 now

There is little things about the olympics I dislike... such as cutting the arts fund to fund the stadium. Yeh its annoying but this will do so much for our country! The olympics wont be in just London, athletes will be staying all over the country. And me seeing first hand what the commonwealth games did for Manchester... it does so much for the surrounding area. The area around what is now Manchester City's ground has improved so much due to the games.
I believe fully that england will deliver, I believe that we can deliver a more individually and exciting opening and closing ceremony, and it will only be a weeks time when scandals come out about how the closing ceremony was faked in some way or someone wasnt pretty enough to be in it.
The opening and closing ceremony for the Commonwealth games were actually good. And very well organised, my sister got to be in it and she was practicing for a year ahead of the closing ceremony!
The olympics in 2012 is gonna be the Commonwealth games on steroids!

Xander I agree. The UK spells disaster for the Olympics. I'd be surprised to see it come out with it's reputation currently after 2012. The UK should just pass it on and forget about everything. That little preview with the bus this morning was extremely cringy. Apart from that, Its the PERFECT place for terrorists to target.
It's also pretty obvious the ceremonies, graphics, venues and logo aren't going to live up to this year already.
We should be ashamed for bidding. Not celebrating it. It's gonna be worse than Athens :conf2:

The terrorist threat is a major issue for the UK, it wasn't in Beijing but it always has been a issue in the UK. Just think the Olympics are a prime target now for terrorist groups and no doubt something will be foiled.
Our planned venues are nothing that makes you go WOW. Our stadium is inspired by a bowl.

Work on the olympics has started 3months early, so we are on target.
It doesn't matter if 2012 is as good as the Beijing Olympics, they are our Olympics and we should celebrate it rather than concentrating on the negatives
and we can't use terrorists as another negative because if we do we are letting them win

What a defeatist attitude! Do you give up on everything or something?
There would be nothing I would hate more that to give in and pass it on to someone else! That to me sounds like a failure and anyone that doesnt try and just gives up is a failure. Thats not what the UK is about, we have our own story to tell the world, our royalty, our growth throughout the year.
Some people need to learn to respect their own country, if you dont like it here please go somewhere else. The UK is my home and I believe that it can deliver 100%
Do you go to art galleries? Do you go to the theatre? If you do then you will know what people in the UK are capable of and we have extreme talent and we can make our own fantastic opening ceremony. Bejing was good but I think London will be more interesting.
I am actually just quite annoyed at the defeatist approach you have to life, I hope you are not gonna get a job where you have to make brave decisions or stick up for yourself because to me it sounds like if someone is better than you, you just give in! So what if bejiing is better than us? This is a chance for the country to come together, show the world who we are and what we do. Dont think of this as a contest but a chance and a celebratin of UK Culture. Dont know what UK Culture is? Try going to see a film or go to the theatre or to a gallery, its all their mate. Just open your eyes.
And what are you on about terrorists werent a threat to Bejing? Are you JOKING me?! Did you not see the torch relay?!

But there will always be the threat of Terrorism in London, you can hide away the fact that it isn't a issue.
Up until tis moment since London got the bid, I have failed to be impressed. Each Olympics should be better than the previous in terms of opening and closing ceremonies, venues etc..., and so far that has been the case.
I just can't get excited or celebrate a Olympics that is unworthy to be in our country. And what does our coutnry have to celebrate, gangs, crimes, shootings, terrorism...?

Bejing was targeted so bad by Tibet protestors! So if they can keep them out from desroying the games I am sure we can do the same for terrorists. Its not an excuse and we shouldnt be letting them win. Saying we should stop the games because we are scared means we are giving in.
We need to live our lives as normal as we can and ignore the fact terrorists exist, terrorists want terror. Dont give them the luxury of it actually happening. Terrorists dont scare me and I believe that we have enough security to make sure nothing happens.

There is a threat of terrorism but that shouldn't stop us
Each olympics is different and are all good in there own way. Just because we are on less of a budget that doesn't mean it will be bad.
The venues chosen is celebrating the UK, why go and build new venues which will cost more money when we already have these venues with bags of history to show the world.
People have 4 years to get excited and until we see the opening and closing ceremony we can't compare it to Beijing or any other olympics hame. It will be along time until this country hosts the games again, its special to host the games so instead of being negative try celebrating that London will be the focus of the entire world in 4 years time

- I don't give up on everything. I just give up on this nation.
- It would be less embarrassing to give it away than to have to watch it.
- I don't feel I need to respect this country. I can happily and proudly say I hate the UK and Ireland without hesitation. There's nothing that makes me want to celebrate it. When I go on holiday I feel much more at home. No frowns or glares by passer by's in the street. Just open arms and smiles. No horrible foods. Instead there are rich flavours and beautiful exotic dishes. There is rarely rain or grey skys. Just warm seas and a beating sun. There's a few reasons of the top of my head. Is it any wonder half my family have moved across the world
- Don't worry. As soon as I'm old enough and have a job I'll never come back to the UK unless I am needed or there's something wrong with a family member.
- Yes. I have been to art galleries in the UK. They are all filled with Italian and American and European paintings and sculptures.
- The UK may have talent, but judging by the current 2012 plans there isn't much talent in the British Olympics design and culture board.
- I don't have a defeatist approach to life. It isn't fair to judge that by one small paragraph in a thread on a forum. I live a perfectly happy un depressed life with little or no worries.
- No I don't give in if someone is better than me. Infact I like the believe personally that I am better than alot of people. I know perfectly well how to stand up to myself. Yet again I don't know how your able to judge or determine that from a few words on a forum.
- There isn't much to show the world what the UK is about. It will make it even harder with the fact most of the rest of the world hates the UK.
- I'm aware what UK culture is. I'm also aware of many other cultures, and compared to them the UK's is pathetic. Minus invading other countries out of their free will and having a pointless royal family there isn't much to boast.
- As I mentioned above, most art galleries are filled with European and American work, just as many cinema's are filled with mostly American movies.
- Terrorists in Beijing was a much lower rate. I wouldn't even call it terrorism. It was pro campaigning and protesting, not terrorism. After the US and Arabian countries the UK is the biggest Terrorist hot spot, and the biggest event in the world is screaming to them.
tbh, I don't know what any of it has to do with the Olympics failing or succession in 2012 written above, but here we are. My answers. I just hope we can put this arguing behind us and respect our differences.

The united states had the olympics and the world cup in a 2 year window!
Usa 94
Atlanta 96... After london 2012 england will be perfect to hold the world cup... We even did a good job with euro96.
Just hope the venues after the london games are there for everybody to use.
They bulldozed the Big Breakfast cottage because its where the stadium is going :bawling:
Seriously though I don't really agree on it being called the London Olympics, it might be based there but some of the events are happening elsewhere in the UK.

The best thing is about us hosting the world cup, we're already ready for it. The stadiums are ready and we have world class stadiums all over the country, even some in leagues one and two, Elland Road and Valley Parade.

Yeah, the only problem is that America has had alot of Olympics, so New York was ruled out for another few years, Moscow was ruled out because of its leadership and Dictator like ways. (I think it was something to do with already hosting the games in a dictated country) For the same reason as America, Madrid was ruled out. I'm not sure why Paris was ruled out. All I know is that it was close between us and them. Didn't leave much contenders in the end.
The Olympics can be passed on for numerous reasons. The countries current state, budgeting, protesting...
Years of planning doesn't necessarily mean an amazing event.

Uh, no. If Moscow was ruled out for that reason then why wasn't Beijing? There's not even a democracy in China...
And I'm sorry, but Madrid, Paris, Moscow and New York aren't "much contenders"? That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard.
And as for your final point - years of countless cynicism and moaning about the Olympics won't make for an amazing event either if you're going to uphold this, quite frankly, prejudice attitude about the whole thing.
There was a LOT of skepticism over the Beijing Olympics with all the Tibet protests, the pollution, the human rights abuses, the autocracy, poverty...and countless other reasons and look what they managed to put on for us. A fantastic show.

I dont know where you live but in the north everyone here is friendly (Unless its a bum or a drunk, but you get them everywhere) there is nothing I enjoy more than british food, yorkshire puddings, black puddings. Chunky root vegetable soup, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, vegetables, roast beef, turkey, chicken, gravy, dumplins, corn beef hash.
I love it all, and I say this to loads of people... I find it hard to eat foreign food. Its all in opinion but you cannot call the UK uncultural and that the food is rubbish!
You are not looking hard enough, you are going to the Mainstream cinemas, you are going to top museums, there is a gallery near where I live in Oldham and it houses just local talent from schools, colleges and local artists. Its amazing, and gives you goosebumps when you see it, have you ever been to a film festival or an Indie cinema? There you will see some fantastic british films, even in american films, half the actors/characters are british!
There is more to Britain than just invading countries, we have invented things. We had the first test tube baby! We have some of the greatest writers EVER come from england. William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth. People that people all over the world admire. We have the most popular language in the world originate from us, yes the royal family is boring to US, but to the world. Its exciting, they get so interested by it! And our countries bizarre and exciting history is down to the royal family, henry and his eight wives, some kings changing the face of religion to suit them. Yes pointless but its so exciting for some people. Just because you are culturally ignorant to where you live doesnt mean everyone in...
I cannot wait until this country proves people wrong. How about you stop running off to other countries but making the most out of the one which is your home! Yes we have rain and winds and its miserable alot, but we can get together like no other countries can, an example... Gay pride. I have been going all weekend, and the whole of Manchester has got together to celebrate Homosexuals and Transexuals. We are so open minded... its something America doesnt have! No one can pull together like we do... AND be so fair! yes China pulled together... but fairly? NO! They said a girl couldnt perform in their opening ceremony because she wasnt pretty enough! That is not something the UK would ever do, and I am damn proud of it!

It's also pretty obvious the ceremonies, graphics, venues and logo aren't going to live up to this year already.
We should be ashamed for bidding. Not celebrating it. It's going to be worse than Athens :conf2: #1 We were closen over Paris, Madrid, New York and Moscow for a reason for a good reason.
#2 even if we wanted to pass the olympics we couldnt
#3 weve been doing years of planning for the bid and the planning / stadium design / athletete village and olympic site
What I said was Moscow wasn't chosen because Beijing was ran as a Dictated country. The officials didn't want this 2 years in a row because it could damage the reputation.
Madrid and New York were whittled down because the games had been previously hosted in those countries much later than London and Paris who the board thought should get a change as the last time they got it was the early 1900's. America had hosted regularly since 1980 (USA: 1980, 1984, 1996, 2002 << winter) and Spain had it in 1992.
I didn't say any countries weren't contenders. I said that after the the problems had been sifted out it left only really London and Paris to battle it out for 2012.
Finally, Beijing faced completely different problem that the UK have to face.

I am actually just quite annoyed at the defeatist approach you have to life, I hope you are not going to get a job where you have to make brave decisions or stick up for yourself because to me it sounds like if someone is better than you, you just give in!
Fair enough. You are holding up a fair point.

The Olympics is/are about the athletes, not the venues.
Who else can use the Dome, Wimbledon, Wembley, Horsegaurds Parade, Greenwich, Lords etc.
Our Marathon will go past most London Landmarks, our Olympic Park will mean our games are one of the greenest and most compact yet.
The designs are functional and easy to take apart for after the games.
It's all well and good building a 100,000 stadium deisgned like a dragon standing one legged on a trumpet, but after the games....what will we need it for?
The Birds Nest will now be used as China's National Stadium, we already have one in Wembley.
And taxpayers here would go ape if they found out they were paying for something when they can get it much cheaper.
Simple really.

Exactly! We have a brand spanking new stadium at Wembley, so to create another massive landmark which will never be used is stupid! I am sure everyone in this thread would be happier not to pay more money on their own/parents tax to create a super duper stadium that will be a waste.
I reckon London is setting a standard for future olympics, its gonna be special in its own way... the stadium is something like 70% recycled! And everything afterwards can be recycled such as the banner of the athletes that go round the stadium... that can be degraded or recycled.
