View Full Version : Prisoner's Dilema

It was so nice to see someone beat the prisoner's dilema task. Normally people wipe each other out.

To those who are unfamiliar with it, it is classed as game theory.

The set up

Two prisoners have been arrested for murder and kept separately.

If neither confess, both do one year for a minor charge

If one confesses and the other does not, the one who confessed walks free and the other is hanged.

If both confess, both do life.

You are one of the prisoners, what do you do?

Logic dictates you take the action which has the least drastic negative consequence should things go pear shaped. So both should end up confessing, as they can not be sure what the other will actually do.

When we play this it is called the red - blue game and one team by going one colour when the other team goes a certain colour can result in negative or minus points. Usually all the teams lie and everyone gets negative points.

One time in a class the lecturer made us hand over money to him which he said was the prize fund. I sussed he was expecting us to cut each other's throats so he would end up pocketing our cash, so I managed to pursuade the team I was on to loose. (The key to this game is altruism), and so unexpectedly the other team won, and at least the lecturer did not get to pocket the money. The winning team then reciprocated by handing our cash back.

So well done to Sara and Lisa for sussing this one out.

If you go here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilema#Real-life_examples) at the bottom of the section it looks like someone has already beaten me to adding in what happened last night. :spin2:

Not really 'beating' it.

If there is the slightest chance that your opponent is going to steal, you should steal as it becomes unexploitable.

If there is no chance that your opponent is going to steal (as in with Lisa and Sara, there was 100% trust), stealing becomes +ev

In a single game of this, where situations outside of the game play no part in anything (public perception etc) then you should never share.

Indeed.

The game was set up in a way where sharing would have happened due to past events and public perception.

I wish Rex had been in the mix ... then it would have been funny. He might well have convinced his opponent he was going to share, and then picked 'take'. I can imagine him doing that.

Me too :P
I could imagine him sharing as well, though

The thing is, if you choose not to share, is you end up with M A D, Mutual Assured Destruction. If both chose take, they would have lost every thing, and that is what usually happens when people play the Red Blue game, which was why I got our team to throw the match, plus I did not want some smug lecturer pocketing our cash, when we were on the breadline and he was on a fat salary.

wow cool nice one..
.. prob with the setup was that no matter which two were nommed they both would allway pick share because they all have an eye on a career outside bb so being the nasty one to pice "take" would have screwed them ... if not in the eyes of the other housemates then certainly to the public.
I think any combo .. even Mickey/Rex or Lisa/Kat would have ended in share/share.
