Protestors fear that an experiment which has been organised by several of the worlds biggest countries could destroy the planet. On the 10th of September scientists will activate a massive machine, the 17 mile-long ring under the french-swis border, to try and re-create the big bang, and discover new dementions other than the four that we already know of. The 'Atom Smasher' cost a massive 4.4 billion pounds.

Its sensationalist reporting. If there were any major risks involved it wouldn't be allowed to happen and governments around the world would step in.

The deadliest damage it'll probably do is blow a fuse, lmao. Like Tom said, I don't think they'd risk all life as we know it.

We get bombarded every year by cosmic radiation at higher energies than the Large Hadron Collider will do, and yet we are still here.
This is how the BBC answers the concerns (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/bigbang/asktheexpert.shtml)
The safety briefing from CERN (http://public.web.cern.ch/public/en/LHC/Safety-en.html)
Although a court case might help show the doom mongers up for what they are, like the court case in Dover Pennsylvania showed up ID for what it was.

We could introduce the aliens to the joys of reality television and show them the real lives of humans! It would be like a nature show to them.

Well we were not destroyed
But a 16 year old in India commited suicide because the media said it would destroy everything she loved, which she did not want to see happen.
So it turned out the only danger was from gross misreporting in the press
As for the LHC, it is down at the moment for repairs after a magnet failed causing a leak of Helium into the main tunnel

The machine got switched off after the first week because it wasn't working properly. I heard that they're hoping to turn it back on in early 2009.

Which is something those of us with an interest in the field of particle physics and cosmology are eagerly waiting for. I just hope we can make a better job of educating the public not to believe the woo-woo about the LHC.
Meanwhile, surprisingly enough this Rap song is quite informative and ought to be the Christmas Number 1
