For philosophy we've been learning the differences between "humans" and "people".
Generally, Human is the term for someone with the same DNA as us, but a person is more varied. Like, it can be argued that a person in a permanent grade12 coma is a human, and not a person because they have no self-awareness, morals, traits, etc, which define a person.
In your opinion, is there a difference between a person and a human?
Can an animal be a person?
Can you be a human and not a person?
Can you be a person and not a human?

well person comes off persona i suppose so yeah all are right except being a person and not a human i suppose

I think "person" is a subset of "human".... ie I don't think you can be a person without being human ...but you can be human without being a person ( ie brain death).
So the word "person" has a social idea behind it ... how does that person interact with society (morals/ethics etc...plus culturally ie anthropology) where as the word "human" I think as a strictly zoological definition.
So I don't think an animal can be a person (limited understanding of social order etc) but we can treat them alot better than we do because they have some common traits with us ...ie they feel pleasure pain etc.
Anyway your question touches on lots of sensitive issues like animal rights, euthanasia and the biggy.. right to life versus right to choose.

The terms are synonymous
Looking at the coma patient example
We say that person is in a coma, rather than that human is in a coma
In terms of zoology I think the more correct term is Homo Sapien
If they are not the same, where stands the word inhuman?
(Which according to the spell checker here is valid)

I don't always disagree with you Sex except when you call women sluts because, just like most men, they like to flirt harmlessly now and then.
So do you agree with churchly Sticks who thinks "person" and "human" are the same thing despite several people's clear examples of when a "human" is not a person. His only proof seems to be "We say that person is in a coma, rather than that human is in a coma".... lol... well that's all settled then Sticks :spin2:

I don't think you understand the question. There are plenty of examples in this thread where a human ISN'T a person.
By human we're referring to the type of animal we are. By "person" we're referring to how capable we are to fit in, and interact with, society. Get it. A person in this respect is seen as a UNIT of society. So an example AGAIN of where a human isn't a person is when someone suffers permanent brain death...is alive in a hospital but on a respirator being kept alive. No brain activity. This is no longer a person .. can't interact with the society and never will. Human BUT NOT a person.
Others would argue that a 1 hour old embryo ( ie just a few cells in size) is human but not a person.

I think generally now-a-days, everyone referrs to a "human" as a "person" - like someone would say; "You know that person over there?" instead of "that human over there".
I think a person is an indivudal human, and a human is a person (confusing myself here) - basically, when people call someone a person.. they are generally talking about a human (man or woman).
As for animals being a person, I don't think they can be. As I stated above, a person is a human.
Right confused myself but hey-ho! :laugh:
