I'm not a huge fan of her songs, but I do think she's really talented. I don't think there are lots of people out there who can sing like her who aren't already stars. She's lucky because she's pretty as well, so that adds to her overall commercial success/appeal. I hope there's more to come from her, e.g. more songs she writes. I didn't realise she had fans who were completely obsessed - I haven't met any.

I'm not just bigging up Leona, there's plenty of other talented people - most of which are also in your "bad music" banner. And it was the same last week during the XF. Some girl wowed everyone and you said you didn't like her because she was "boring". What do they have to do to be deemed talented for you? It doesn't make any sense for me.

I guess it's down to opinion, but to say there's no talent in the charts when there quite clearly is - it just baffles me.

Allow me to explain.

I've never said there's no talent in the charts, I just think the more talented/better music gets overlooked because it's not 'radio friendly'. So you get all these singers releasing music that's pleasing to the public/radio, and the same bland rubbish that you'll hear someone else sing a few months later. Leona, IMO, is one of these singers. I'm not saying Leona isn't talented, I just think there's MORE talent. Have we seen proof of her playing instruments? How come she doesn't always play them? As for songwriting, she wrote about 3 songs on her debut. It's very rare that I respect an artist that doesn't contribute to the writing of an album, because I believe that's what brings out the talent

Write your own songs, your experiences, your thoughts, your ideas; and IMO, it makes you want to work with it more. It's something you've produced, so then you'll work on the vocal melody, have ideas about the instrumentation, and go from there. That's how most of my fave artists/bands work. I'm obviously not the only person who thinks this, last night I was talking to a mate of my bf's who was saying that bands such as Oasis and U2 walk all over Leona Lewis and Rihanna in the talent stakes.

I personally find Leona's music boring and dreary. It all sounds samey to me. Better In Time and Forgive Me are both uptempo songs with a drum machine beat. All her ballads; 'hmm, really slow, with a piano, throw in a few ad libs, cliche lyrics, ta-dah everyone will love it'. It's radio pleasing but otherwise, nothing amazing. As Scampi said, there's other types of talent. Eric Prydz is an amazing producer, as is Mark Ronson. Just because I find someone boring, I'm not necessarily denying them of their talent [as I said with Leona, she is talented, but I don't believe she's as talented as she's made out to be]. I can't even remember who the girl was, she didn't stand out to me. I like unique music. Someone who stands out, is individual. Katy Perry, Sam Sparro, Patrick Wolf, Evanescence, Porcelain And The Tramps. All of these are unique. It's hard to compare them to anyone else. Now let's compare Leona. Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey etc. She doesn't stand out for me. The only reality show winners I like to listen to are Shayne Ward [who's music, I'll admit, isn't great], Leon Jackson [can't say yet], Kelly Clarkson [The most talented reality show winner IMO], and Will Young [Good voice, Great music], but as I've stated in the parenthesis, the only two who really stand out for me are Kelly and Will. They're unique, they've developed their own style/music.

Now, my bad music banner. Again, I haven't said any of them are talentless? I've called leona boring because I DO find her boring. Rihanna is extremely overrated. Her voice is nothing special at all, she's just been lucky to have good songs. If it wasn't for Umbrella, or SOS, she'd probably have been dropped by her company. Chris Brown, I'll admit, is a decent songwriter but his voice drives me crazy. Kanye West has one of the most unbearable attitudes in the music industry, and although his music isn't awful, I only find the tracks with samples that stand out [i.e. Diamonds From Sierra Leone, Stronger etc]. Madonna's past her sell-by date. 4 Minutes was awful, and although Give It 2 Me was pretty good, I don't wanna think about a 50 something woman singing 'Give It 2 Me, yeah' and 'if you can handle it, undress me'. She was good in her day, but it's like most older people [Cliff Richard, Duran Duran], They lose it. &I'm a fan of Duran Duran, but their older stuff is much better. Now My Chemical Romance I was a HUGE fan of. Until they became Mainstream and did all this 'gimmick' rubbish. Welcome To The Black Parade was, again, mainstream pleasing. Do you ever hear any of their older music played? Nope. You just get annoying teenagers who run around going 'OMG MCR IS SO COOL' because they liked Teenagers, or Welcome to The Black Parade. They don't stand out anymore because everyone tries to copy them.

I don't think it's BORING that she doesn't fall out of clubs drunk, It's just she never ever had much personality: she's too scared of upsetting everyone and is a bit of a fence sitter. A bit like Rachel. and on the X Factor i never warmed to her at all, as I knew Simon was desperate for her to win and shone really stupid praise at her at times when she wasn't even that good.

So for the thousandth time;
it's not all about voice.
I'd much rather listen to someone with a range of like.. one octave who produces good, well written, exciting/meaningful music with fantastic instrumental backing.
For me - That's almost the opposite of Leona.

&OMG Sia, I agree;; Will Young, Girls Aloud +Kelly Clarkson > Leona.
Why have the three of them been so successful?

That's all in your opinion though, its not fact that her voice is amazing. There are hundred of thousands of people who have more a less the same voice or better than her but she was just lucky to be given the opportunity to get to where she is. The problem is with most Leona fans on here, they really attack anyone who disses her, fair play but there has to some issues that you agree on with other people. It does also look quite pathetic the way some people defend her. I don't think that she's that special really, most of her songs I find so annoying, all kinda similar.
People like Duffy deserve to have the same amount of of recognition as her and succes because her voice is not samey lke all the artists nowadays, its a very unique voice as Leonas isn't really, the same as most female Pop/R&B artists. Leona Fans, we ARE allowed to dislike her, we don't have to like her and it feels like your forcing us to like her when were all entitled not to. :wink:

it's not all about voice.
I'd much rather listen to someone with a range of like.. one octave who produces good, well written, exciting/meaningful music with fantastic instrumental backing.
For me - That's almost the opposite of Leona.

Why have the three of them been so successful?

THIS THREAD IS FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE HER, so why are you on it?!

And no I don't want to read her interviews, and it's YOUR opinion that Leona is "better than okay'. IMO yes she can hit the right notes or whatever, but so can many other people, thus, in the MUSIC world i define her as okay. As many people have her voice, but much more input/personality/fun.

all really original sounds/voices who care about their music and aren't afraid to step outside the box.
And yeah, Will Young's voice isn't like anyone elses, No one can really match the amazing combination of girls aloud, who are 5 fiesty amazing singers with brilliant songs and who compliment eachother well, and Kelly has managed to carve a successful career out of being a brilliant singer, and actually HAVING a personality.

Just because he isn't internationally famous like Leona [urgh], doesn't mean he isn't succesful. He is constantly winning awards for his music/voice/style, and he's been out of the limelight for about a year because he's recording a new album.
I, for one, am a BIG fan of will. He won pop idol SEVEN years ago and is still remembered, and is still producing amazing records which he has a lot of input in.
What did Leona do? Won a competition 3 years ago, Get a no.1 single, dissapear for a year while most people write her album, come back, appear on Oprah so she's famous in the U.S.A and then be "world known". You call THAT success?

Girls Aloud = recognizable sound/voices, not many five piece girlbands that sound like them. Their sound is pretty unique too.
Will Young = 2 UK Number #1 albums, 1 UK Number #2 album, 4 UK Number #1 singles. Also 2 BRIT awards and countless nominations.

We could easily go the Leona Lewis thread and bash her there, if you'd prefer to give an argue against our opinions.

Were kind enough not to comment in the Leona thread so the best you can do is not comment for this thread as there is obviously going to be negativity about which upsets the Leona fans. And what you say is all in YOUR opinion, its YOUR opinion that she has a amazing voice. As Sia said there are many people that have her voice, she isn't unique enough compared to some artists that actually deserve that arn't getting enough recognition and deserve the same amount of success.

What does y'all think of the rumour that she's doing a duet with The Script at Xmas covering 'Fairytale Of New York'.
IMO; that's a complete travesty. The song is unique itself, and having two artists that are bland and uninteresting covering it is awful. It shouldn't happen. I don't believe it will. However if it does, I hope it flops. That song shouldn't be meddled with, especially with those two.
