BIG Brother star Darnell Swallow was in Ipswich today to launch the Respect festival.

Following a small parade through town, the festival which is now in its fifth year was launched at midday at Suffolk New College.

Darnell, 26, opened the festival to a crowd of cheering fans and gave a special performance of his new single, Shonin, to kick start his nationwide tour. He sang two other tracks about his time in the Big Brother house.

The popular singer and songwriter emerged from the Big Brother 9 house on the final night of the reality TV contest, finishing fifth with 15 per cent of the public vote.

Following his performance, he signed t-shirts and autographs for scores of excited youngsters.

Darnell said: “It was really awesome. I had so much fun and there are so many nice folk here.

“I have been busy in the recording studio since coming out of the house. I want to create some longevity out of being in the house, whether it is through music, youth work or presenting.”

Mayor of Ipswich David Hale and Ipswich MP Chris Mole also said a few words to open the festival and then there were performances from the ICR Chinese Drum Ensemble and St Matthew's CEVAP School performing arts group.

Live music, stalls and much more will be on offer at the college until 6pm today in a bid to celebrate our community and everyone in it.

Actually not that many. :/ I can't think how many, actually. I was expecting the amount of people that where there on a typical eviction night, but it was about a quarter of that.
