View Full Version : Which UK political party do you support?
OK I'm not the best in the world at politics but I know a lot of people on here are. Recently, there have been a few polls with labour trailing behind, but with a general election in around 8 months, which party do you support and possibly vote for (if you can vote)?

You probably won't get many people sharing their political allegiances over the Internet, but I've voted in the poll.

Conservative for me, We all have our own thoughts and opinions as to which party would best suit our needs. I like the thought of more people being introduced to work that have happily sat at home for years without any real need. I know many people who are on benefits are very genuine and deserve their benefits but their are also many who are happy to live off our contributions and who have never worked a day in their lives. I think a more hardline view needs to be taken with regards to this.

the Labour govt are trying to do that, but the conservatives cut funding for real needy people whenever they are elected. We had a conservative local council for a couple of years and they tried to cut funding for mental health/learning disabiltities centres and the local counselling centre. Labour are bad enough when it comes to funding but the Conservatives are even worse

The thing is Labour have had the opportunityt o do something about it and havent succeeded! that said I know full well that there are problems with every political party and know we all vote for the one that appears to meet our individual needs the most.
I like the conservatives policy on Housing and the fact that they plan to involve communities in the decision making process with regards to where new homes are built. I am also keen to see their Health policies brought into practice. I have no desire to go to a clinic to see a doctor I am not familiar with, I like going to my local GP practice I feel safe there, yet Labour have plans that will see the closure of many GP surgeries. Another clincher for me is their fair fuel policy which would see the tax on fuel reduce as the cost of fuel increased thus keeping prices manageable for you and me!
However I am sure like I just did other people would have lots of reasons for supporting Labour and criticisms of Conservatives policy making. I just choose for me!

Tbh, Labour is a total joke at the moment...any alternative would do.
The Labour government is in disarray at the moment, you've got Miliband just waiting for Brown to make another slip up so he can twist the knife and take over - but by that time, I think the Conservatives will be in power. Before Tony Blair came along, the Labour party had lost FOUR elections in a row, and at one point they only held 2% more of the vote than the Liberal Democrats. It could well happen again.

Labour- free treatment for cancer patients
Free nursery care places for 2 year old
More help for children from poorest backgrounds
Help to get low income families back into work and not relying on benefits, eg free training, more money for apprenticeships for young people
Conservatives want to give tax relief to the highest earners, cut inheritance tax for millionaires, cut services for children from the poorest backgrounds, cut spending on school improvements...

The thing is we will all believe what we choose to about our chosen party and read their policies in different ways.

Conservatives will cut public funding, that is fact...schools, hospitals, and services for the most needy. Social mobility- forget it!

I'm not too impressed with any of them really. Politics is becoming more about a battle of images - thanks to the influence of American elections, perhaps - and less about policies.
I think the Conservatives will win the next general election for obvious reasons, namely that Labour's popularity has gone downhill, and that the two seem to take office in a cyclic pattern (the Lib Dems exist and are third most popular, but have a long way to go to be taken seriously and to have a shot at winning). Whether I want this outcome or not is a different matter...
I just hope that whoever goes into power, we're left in a better state of affairs than we have been in the past and right now, but maybe that's too much to ask for!
It's a tough one. People died to give us the vote, so I feel obliged to vote (if you don't vote, surely you can't complain about what you end up with). However, at the moment, I am torn. I cannot ever see myself voting Conservative, and I have always voted Labour in the past, except for the very first time I voted when I went Lib Dem. I really don't want to vote Labour right now though.
Unless something drastic happens, the Tories are going to win the next election. I do think though that their winning will be more a reflection of how bad Labour have done, rather than any endorsement of how well people think the Tories will do.
Ah what the heck - maybe I will vote for the Monster Raving Loony Party!

Labour!
I'm surprised Conservative appeals to a mass audience, it all seems very elitist with a sort of "every man for himself attitude" - it sort of enforces that rich people dont have to pay for poor people's medical care or things like that, meaning it doesn't really benefit the mass population of the country.

I am not sure why rich people SHOULD pay for poor people's care etc.. I think that we are going to get a new party in power whether people like it or not.

I think Dupin means that the Conservative/Thatcherite ethos is "everyman for himself". We all have a responsibility to contribute to society and that includes enabling the weakest members of that society to be able to improve their situation and taking care of those that cant!

I percieve a major flaw in your reason for wanting a conservative government!!!!!You want idlers introduced to work. So do I. However under Tory policies you will simply get a repeat of history with unemployment soaring.....Where then will it it be possible to put willing workers to work let alone idlers.
The Tory policies are a replica of the 1980s/1990s.....Cuttung costs (Freezing rates as they have irresponsibly promised in a time of economic turmoil will inevitably result in councils country wide having to lay people off and cut services to make up the short fall for not having rate rises to cover inflation.......Also the tories will inevitably attack the civil service and cause unemployment after unemployment......
This present labour government under Brown is flawed no doubt about that but believing the Tories will fair the working class or even the middle class any better is I fear a major attack of wishful thinking...........

And here we are. Conservatism as an ideology is not progressive. Show me what changes the conservatives can bring to the country and I shall be happy to debate with anyone about it!

Over the past year, I've gone from quite strong Conservativism to absolutely nothing. I no longer hold myself to any political affiliation. I appreciate points from both sides, but support none. Both are, in my opinion, one and the same.
They've both devolved from the centre and now they're just milking their PR machine to get one over each other.

I agree I would like to see Labour more centre left than they are and that is why people are becoming disillusioned with UK politics probably. But the Conservatives have never created opportunities for the ordinary working classes to move forward or enabled social mobility and equality for all. And I dont see that changing

I wouldnt be so sure. Gordons done well over the banking crisis has done him great favours. Ive been disappointed with some of Labours decisions but running a country is no easy job and I would rather them than the conservatives any day
