In my opinion, money can't buy happiness, but it can prevent you from being unhappy.

No money can not buy you happiness.

Yes it can.

But you don't necessary need money to be happy.

I have always wondered this, I would just love to have lots and lots of money. But It can also ruin relations in the family having so much money. I think in the short term, yes. But in the long term no.
There are a lot of people out there who have lots of money, and are very lonely people. I think it just makes someone more unhappy than they were orignally were.

No. People think it can. If people have watched The Secret Millionaire, you'll see some of the millionaires aren't that happy, whereas some of the poor people are happy.

Not LITERAL happiness, but yeah course it can. Give a hobo a grand and they'll be ecstatic

You know what they say: "You know who you're real friends are once you're weighed down with cash", and I totally agree with that.

I think so. You don't need to have money to be happy, obviously, but I think people are much happier with money than without it; if you see what I mean.

Money can't buy you happiness,no way.

It would be great to be rich, you could buy loads of clothes and concert tickets and so on but you can't buy love, friendship and everything thats important in life.

Agreed. The material aspects of life don't make you truly happy.

Money can buy you peace of mind - which for some people equates happiness. And I guess if someone is very materialistic, money could buy them happiness.

Emzy-!!
06-10-2008, 01:01 PM
I don't think money can buy you happiness. You could be the richest person in the world but have no one to share it with.
I just think that money can buy you things to make you look happy to other people.

I don't think money alone can make you happy. But it certainly can help.

Hell yes, it allows you to do all the things you normally wouldnt be able to do, so yes I think it can buy happiness.

It can make you happy, alot of the reasons why people are unhappy comes down to money problems
I think Money alone would make me very happy

It's not a causation relationship.

Money doesn't = happiness.

But it certainly goes a long way into helping.
Not just for materialistic thing, but for comfort of living. For example my mum is disabled (to the point she feels excruciating pain 24/7) and all it would take would be an operation to replace her knees / hips... it wouldn't make her able to walk, but she wouldn't be in constant torture.

Plus the fact everyone likes buying things.

If I'm going to get technical (I think I am... I am), the buying of an item incorporates a "reward" system to yourself, and if I'd group behaviourist and biological psychologists - the reward system would increase levels of serotonin and thus enhance the feeling of "happiness". Erm, I'm not gonna go into other psychology branches cos I'm too geeky.

See that's basically what I was trying to say! Oh Lauren I don't know what I'd do without your little snippets of knowledge [just realised that I've spelt knowledge wrong for my entire life] on here!

I suppose that quesiton depends on the person.

If you are a person who is very materialistic then i suppose money can buy you happines. and if you are easily pleased then yeh i suppose it can.

But if your a person who values finer things in life like love, friendship and companionship then no it cant buy you happiness. cos you can have all the money in the world if your a person who wants love then it wont help at all.

Sarah.

Yes it can, because the things that would make me happy involve money in some way. So with money, I could accomplish what I want to do and be happy. So yes.

Ross

Princess

Ok so I said it couldn't but it does involve money to make you happy sometimes. Like if I couldn't buy cd's and listen to music on a mp3 and wear pretty clothes I wouldn't be so happy.

But thats not what makes me primarily happy, its the love I get from people and give back to them. Without love we wouldn't be happy,so the thing that we need the most to be happy can't be bought. Not genuinely anyway.

You have to be alive to be happy, just waking up now and seeing another day come to an end makes me so happy, I'm so very very scared to die.

And all the money in the world cant buy you another day to live and be happy again for another day.

Exactly. Being free of financial burdens in itself is an aid to happiness.....Too much money however could have the opposite effect by generating false friends etc.

Bottom line is happiness is a state of mind than can exist with or without money......It boils down to the particular personality of each individual..Some are miserable gits like me and nothing makes them happy.... (Just joking!!! I think!!!!) others are happy to the point of being positively insane when there is no reason to be happy....

Money doesn't automatically bring happiness. It gives you more choices. However, lack of money may bring unhappiness, in my opinion. But according to a opinion poll (http://minekey.com/theopinion/15816/money-cant-buy-happiness-but-sure-it-helps), 97% people think Money can't buy happiness, but sure it helps! :)

It really doesn't bring you happiness unless you're joyful inside in the first place. There's so many examples of miserable millionaires, particularly the ones who get rich quick or win the lotto. If you're an unhappy pauper the likelihood is that you'll eventually feel exactly the same if you suddenly become rich, give or take a month or a year or whatever.

I wonder if Simon Cowell would give up his money for a wife who loved him and some children to love

I doubt a happy mum and dad would reverse that scenario?

Yeah course it can, just because you have money doesn't mean you wont be happy.

I don't believe it does. It'd be like a McDonald's meal. It'll fill you up and give you a rush, but an hour later you'll be hungry again. I think it can help and define your happiness, but true happiness isn't/shouldn't be about things/stuff . It can improve your quality of life.... So let's say you've got no bills to worry about, but you have no friends, no loved ones, and you're sat there in your plush kitchen, staring at your hobbit feet, sick of watching Jeremy Kyle and wondering where all the good **** is... doesn't sound too good.

Niamh.

I don't think it can make you happy if you're not happy already. I know people who have loads of money but are miserable. Having said that if you're already pretty happy, it can make life great!!!!

If your very poor and you were given money you would be happy no doubt.

And for me i am pretty comfortable but up until 6 weeks ago i didnt have a job, and i didnt have a whole lot to spend anymore, first pay check come in, and i was very very happy.

That was probably because you were a generally happy person anyway though. I don't think it would make you happy if you were unhappy for an other reason than lack of funds!!

Yeah thats true, it would help though. lol.

I do agree with the if your unhappy then your not gunna be happy just because of money, but if your unhappy because you dont have money and you get some, then you can be happy.

Yes - if the only problems in your life are financial. If you have other problems - then not necessarily.
