1, take a screen shot by presing shift and Print Screen which copies a image of the screen in the clipboard/

2. open paint and paste the image into paint

3. Save it as a jpg (using the save as option)

4. upload it here> http://www.imageshack.us/

As promised something else a bit different - My Solaris 10 desktop from my Sun Ultra 5

http://img460.imageshack.us/img460/5294/screenshotsc4.th.jpg (http://img460.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshotsc4.jpg)

For those people that like to use free software you can download Solaris 10 for the PC for free from www.sun.com. It comes with bundled with Star Office 7.

Solaris isn't Linux but a full featured version of Unix with a desktop based around Gnome.

easypeasy

Ah so its sun as in the "sun java" people?

easypeasy
05-02-2007, 04:48 PM
Didnt know they were so involved in unix, i kind of thought java was not the best basis for an OS because there a lot of Java based worms and stuff out there.
Im guessing it must be pretty secure though as its unix.

Red Moon
05-02-2007, 07:29 PM
Sun Microsystems, the java people have been making Unix based workstations since computers since 1982. They are the sort of machines you would find in University's or large companies for doing research. In addition to this they also make Unix based enterprise and web-servers. Java is just a spin off from the building and supplying of machines. More recently they have become big in the open source world and the core code of open office comes from Star Office developed by Sun. For a number of years it has been offering their Solaris Operating system in x86 port for PC users.

Give you an idea of cost the list price of mine when it was new but it would have been about Ł3,500. It was the top of the range model of the Ultra 5 series of machines and one of the last produced. It even has a AMD coprocessor card that allows it to run windows 2000 in a window on the screen.

I got from ebay for next to nothing, upgraded the hard disk and installed the latest operating system. It is still a capable machine and great for internet use despite it relatively slow processor compared to a new PC's. One good thing is the 400MHz processor is 64-bit which speeds it all up and the kennel of the operating system has the fastest TCP/IP stack of ant operating system.

Just found out the 30 pound computer (including postage and packing) that produced the screen shot above cost $18,500 plus when new. That's a loss of about $18,440 in five years.

Moral of the story don't by a UNIX workstation new.... wait until the price drops.

Another screen shot of the SUN Ultra 60. This time it is running Solaris 8 and Microsoft Windows 2000 is nicely contained in a window.

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/2342/testtn5.th.jpg (http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=testtn5.jpg)

This is possible because the SUN Ultra 60 has inside it a a PC on a plug in card that shares the display, hard disk, keyboard and mouse with the SUN.

Yeah, that looks pretty much the same as the 'ubunto' I DLed. I was running it from CD though, so as you can imagine, it was pretty damn slow. I haven't decided if I'm guna go with it or not. I have to do some homework first and see what kinda things I'm guna have to change first.

But, meanwhile, I have it on CD, so I can mull the idea over for a while before I decide if I'm guna put it on my HD and run it from there. Plus I can play around with it for a while too.

edit to add: Tiscali Broadband doesn't play well with Linux, so I might have to work that problem out without their support.. :spin:

1. take a screen shot by presing shift and Print Screen which copies a image of the screen in the clipboard

2. open paint and paste the image into paint

3. Save it as a jpg (using the save as option)

4. upload it here> http://www.imageshack.us/

5. copy and paste the second link down into the reply box

It makes you wonder what is Steve Jobs intentions are as far as Windows goes.

Are Apple looking to make add on's or eventually produce something for there own machines and existing Microsoft Windows Machines?

But that is a thread in it's own right.

I've used a mac once before and I thought the same about what you think of Windows. I suppose it's because i've always used windows.

I use macs in my lab classes and I just really dislike them. Perhaps I'm just associating them with lab classes and therefore hating them because they're the stepping stone into eternal SPSS-hell (I hate lab) - but they just seem so faffy to use as opposed to being 'simple' and 'easily guided' like all mac uses say they are?

It does take a while to de-window yourself. But once you get used to a few different keys its much more stable than windows. They never crash and never get virus's.

Couple of features of OS.X

Mac Spaces lets you have virtual desktops you can flip between at a touch of button.

I don't think I have ever changed the desktop wallpaper on this computer. :blush2:

The new one with Vista on it I have got has it set to a Northern Lights wallpaper.

By the way, I'm not a fan of widescreen monitors, there's not enough vertical resolution and the text is very small on an 19" monitor. Web pages are either stretched or there is a blank space at either side.

You would hate the MacBooks 13 inch widescreen then.

I know what you mean about wide screen computers the small font's took several days to get use to and there are always spare bits of screen either side of the browser. I don't find the vertical resolution a problem because it is greater than the last portable I had (800 now compared to 768). What is good a about a windesceen computer has to be playing back DVD which just look great without big black spaces top and bottom.

What would be great is a twistable widescreen display. So you can rotate it though 90 degrees so that the horizontal resolution can be used vertically for text processing and surfing the internet.

Yeah I did, the software is much better than Vista Transformation Pack and it doesn't slow my computer down either.
