View Full Version : Final Fantasy Thread - New Final Fantasy Versus XIII Trailer
I was hoping for the Simple cover like the rest of the series with just the name and the Symbol of the game
Should have been kept that way, really. What was the point in changing it?
That's what happens when marketing departments who are out of touch with the fanbase get a say in things.
It reminds me of that advert they did for Halo : ODST. How much exactly did that piece of **** cost to produce? And how many additional people who have never played Halo decided to buy it based on an advert with no gameplay footage?

I saw no reason to change it )=
That's the jist of it, really. Sure it's not a bad cover, but why would you possibly feel the need to change it? It's like deciding on a spur to change the Star Wars theme tune.
Bad comparison, but you get the picture.

Maybe it was to make it more eye catching? Most gamers that even vaguely like RPG's will get this but maybe they're trying to grab people who might not play them as often or something? I dunno.

It's almost reverse laziness on SE's part  Instead of creating a simple cover for Europe they've just transferred the slightly more complex american cover.

The Famitsu review's in, it got 39/40. Here's the summary of each review.
10: "Although the game is linear until the midway point, the story is substantial, like no FF before it, with its own distinctive appeal. The battles based around changing characters' roles are fresh and highly strategic. The tempo is speedy and you get very excited when fighting strong enemies. Being able to restart battles is a user-friendly feature I'm happy about.
9: "Unquestionably the highest echelon of event and movie scenes. Moreover, changing Optimas on a dime, the varied abilities and being able to use multiple magics at once bring real exhilaration to the battles. That high quality is unfortunately offset by a story that stays linear until the midway point. The lack of gimmicks during the middle of the game also worried me."
10: "The overwhelming graphics expressing every nook and cranny of this unique world, along with the praiseworthy direction, moved me!! The battle system is applicable both to beginners and micro-managers. The fights progress quickly, and have ratings, so you never grow tired and can always battle with a feeling of urgency. The melancholic story is also so dramatic, you can't tear your eyes away from it."
10: "I doff my hat to the overwhelming graphics and story. Since the game's various systems become denser as the story progresses, you find yourself pulled ever deeper into the experience. The summon battles take careful planning and strategy, so I was frustrated a few times, but the feeling of achievement when you win is something special. You'll be sorry if you don't play this!"

My guess is that it'll be released in the run up to FF13 to feed the buzz.

I recently played through FF8 with a friend for first time in years. It brought back so many memories and was a lot more enjoyable on my 2nd playthrough than my first.
Right now i decided to stick with my FF playing through and am playing FF9 with the same friend although there has been a bit of a delay due to my friend not being available for a few days.

I was the same with FF8, I enjoyed it a lot more when I played it recently. I think it's because I was only like 8/9 when it first came out and I didn't understand it that much but I think it's a great game now. One of my favourite FF's in fact.
IGN have a great big feature on FF13, It's a non spoiling look at characters, summons and gameplay and stuff. It seems like they're bringing back a slightly different version of the Sphere Grid and Weapon Customisation from FFX.

Even then FFX's one wasn't great. FFVII and FFVIII have the best intros. The FFXII one i found quite boring and FFIX wasn't the best.

Playing FFVI at the minute, Probably my 3rd favourite final fantasy game after VII and X, FFIV is up there as well though
Just done the bit where you find out that Terra is half human and half esper and you have that flashback in the Esper world where the Imperial army invade. I never realised before how easy it is to get Gil, Got Mog in my party now as well, I wish Lone wolf could join your party as well though :(

I love VI, I wish they'd port it to the Live Arcade/PSN/Online shop of sort as finding a reasonably priced version of it is a pain.
I used Mog a lot in the first half, My favourite in the end though was always Terra, Celes, Locke & Cyan.

Yeah wouldn't mind playing it on the PSP, I start of using Sabin, Edgar, Locke and Celes, and leave Cyan and Gau back in Narshe, I have always thought that Edgar is the best character in the game, as soon as you get Chainsaw and level up a bit it's really easy + Sabin's rage

Edgar's good in the World of Balance but always found he lost his impact in the World of Ruin. I was never much of a fan of Sabin though. Gau used to be another one I used to use in the first half but like edgar he falls behind in WoR. Locke becomes ridiculous when you get the relic that allows him to equip two weapons.

VI's load times from the PSX disc are downright scary for such a primitive looking game. I really wish they would make it - and all the others - downloadable. We are years into the current console generation now. Entire series worth of classic games should be on tap!
I'll probably finish FFVI later on today or even tonight

I'm surprised they haven't remade FFV & VI for the DS yet given that they already have with III & IV. Then again they might be waiting for the 3DS.

Yeah, I love Chrono Trigger.. the characters could have been a bit better.. only really liked Frog and Robo and obviously Magus when you get him.. he is a much better Villain though and Chrono get's better when you learn Luminare ( think that's what it was called ) bit like Ultima.

Luminaire's beastly, It pretty much makes most bosses into jokes if you give all the magic capsules to Crono.
I loved Frog, Lucca & Magus. I've got it for my DS, I'm on my second playthrough getting all the extra endings. For a game that's like 15 or more years old it holds up incredibly well. A truly timeless game.

I recently completed it again for the first time in ages, Think i completed it at around level 60.. Lavos is to easy for a final boss IMO, the first time i completed it i had no idea that Magus could become a playable character.. think it was because i choose to fight him instead of choosing the other option when he is on the Cliff edge
Just completed the fanatics tower, the final boss is easy when you cast berserk on him.. he casts ultima right near the end though so you need Life3, the one which brings you back to life after you die

Yeah Lavos isn't really difficult, especially if you've taken the time to get the weapons and armour from the sidquests. Luminere + Flare + the third team member distributing ethers = a very dead boss. I fought Magus the first time too, He was quite easy considering you fight him with Frog only but luckily my battery conked out before I could save it so I chose not to fight him the second time to see what happened. He's a great character, although the lack of double/triple techs was disappointing but I suppose he needed a con as he was beastly at everything else.
I can remember being killed by Ultima I think in the tower, I hated that place but the relic you got for it was excellent.

There is no save point at the top of the tower either which makes it even worse if you do die because the battles leading up take ages... Yeah the Relic is the double spell one ain't learnt Ultima yet though and I forgot that you could upgrade the Ragnarok weapon.. and obviously upgrade the cursed shield as well.. think you need to win about 200 battles to upgrade that though

I don't really use Esper's that much.. I don't like how you can only use an esper once per battle.. even though most of them don't do much damage at all and cost a fair bit of MP..

Bartz. I'm glad about Tifa too, and Lightning. She'll be a good character I think. It'll be interesting to see how many characters we get since I remember hearing that the original pushed the umd do it's limit. I'm guessing we'll get a FF11 villain and one or two more characters after that. I'd like Yuna & Vivi I think.

The problem with Rikku & Zell would be that I think Tifa & Zidane pretty much cover their bases already. I'd like an FF8 character though as long as it's not Seifer as we already have Squall.
Was Bartz even a character, really? All those FFV characters were like empty templates. Crap story but the gameplay is amazing. Sadly it gets forgotten a lot squeezed in between two of the best games of the series.

I could never really get into FFV same story for FF3, I think it was the lack of story. I like a good story in my FF's. Those along with 12 are the worst FF's in my opinion.

I used to love Midgar. After yer 15th time playing through it though you really want to get out of it and on to the 'real' game.

A domain name for Final Fantasy XIII-2 has been registered, it has been revealed.
The web address was issued by a company who previously registered domains for several Square Enix properties, according to UFFSite.net.
It is speculated that an announcement could be made at the firm's Japanese showcase next week.
Last year Square Enix refused to rule out the possibility of a direct sequel to the game.
I wouldn't mind this if they learnt from the errors of XIII, with the exception of Snow I liked all the characters and the story wasn't bad (if a little vague). If they make the sequel less linear and the plot more concise then I think it could easily surpass XIII.
Could be nice for those who really wanted to enjoy the mythology of XIII and didn't like the gameplay format. It was far from their most popular game though so this reeks of laziness and/or a business opportunity to cash in on more casual/female fans XIII's advertising campaign may have attracted.
I hate to be a repetetive old bastard about it but to me FF will always be about world maps, random battles, and that sort of thing. Even though I did enjoy X and X-2 a lot. X just had the wow factor the first time you played through it and X-2 is a very good one for extra quests and nuts as nails bosses. I loved the lightening fast battle system in it.
I'm waiting for Chewy to get back with his thoughts about the cross dressing sequence. I wonder did it haunt him for life yet.
Tom4784
13-01-2011, 08:41 PM
Well I think if a Sequel is happening it'll be based on Pulse and I doubt they'd ignore the criticism so I'm quite optimistic about it, That Square conference is happening in a few days so I'm guessing we could get a small announcement about it then although I don't expect anything more then that since they'll be focusing on Versus and Kingdom Hearts.
Ah the cross dressing part, even more traumatic if he picks you
FFX seems so old now can't believe it's been nearly 10 years since it was Released in Europe.. that was the last truly great RPG for me.. there has been a few since then FFX-2 was very good and addictive but for me the main attraction to the game was doing the side quests and the the Search for Tidus storyline was never going to top the pilgrimage/Sin storyline in FFX
Level 14 before the fight with the Guard Scorpion, I think this could be my new record

I really like the look of it, the gameplay is very Kingdom Hearts esque. I like the style of it as well, I can see what they mean about that fantasy and Reality stuff. From what I hear though it's not out until next year at the least and it's looking like it's a PS3 Exclusive.

tbh I hate most of the main characters in FF. Cecil and Terra are easily my favourites.
Yeah the main characters are usually never the star of the show. Zidane was boring. Squall was rubbish compared to Laguna, Cloud's a miserable git. Tidus is just pure and utter hate for me.

I loved Terra, it always annoyed me how she used to leave the team for large amounts of time though. They really need to give FFVI more love, I'm guessing we'll see an FFV & VI remake before long on the 3DS which I'd love as long as it's more in the vein of the IV remake rather then that hateable III.
I always liked Zidane and Tidus, they weren't the best characters of their respective games but they weren't the worst.

I'm not sure have I talked about the genius of Spoony before but he has just started a review/teardown of Final Fantasy X-2. It's fantastic. He might hate Tidus more than I do.

Give it a watch.
His character might not have been the best but the majority of his dialogue in FFX was amazing

Apparently there is a bit of time travel involved in XIII-2, sounds like it could work well if done right

Another Perfect 40: Final Fantasy XIII-2 Gets Famitsu Thumbs Up
You know that thing I wrote a while back about Famitsu's handing out 40 out of 40 games scores being rare? Yeah, maybe not so accurate—at least not at the rate the 40s have been coming lately.
The closely watched Japanese games magazine gave Final Fantasy XIII a 39 out of 40 back in 2009, but it's apparently scored the sequel—launching on December 15 in Japan and January 31 stateside—a perfect 40 out of 40. That means each of the magazines four reviewers gave the game a perfect 10 out of 10.
That makes it the third game this year Famitsu's awarded a perfect score. The prior two were The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
According to Japanese gaming news-watcher Andriasang, the reviewers say the game remedies what was problematic in the original (presumably complaints about the game being over-linear, or that it lacked intermediary points to break from the action, e.g. towns) and that "there's a lot of gameplay to be found."
Final Fantasy XIII-2 adds a time travel mechanic where your choices can alter the actual game world, a tweaked version of FFXIII's realtime battle system, the ability to tame monsters, a "Mog Clock" mini-game that determines how battles begin, and dialogue options that shift each time the game's played.
List of games that have got 40/40
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)
Soulcalibur (1999, Namco, for Dreamcast)
Vagrant Story (2000, Square Co., for PlayStation)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003, Nintendo, for Nintendo GameCube)
Nintendogs (2005, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)
Final Fantasy XII (2006, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008, Nintendo, for Wii)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008, Konami, for PlayStation 3)
428: Fūsa Sareta Shibuya de (2008, Sega, for Wii)
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (2009, Square Enix, for Nintendo DS)
Monster Hunter Tri (2009, Capcom, for Wii)
Bayonetta (2009, Sega, for Xbox 360)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009, Nintendo, for Wii)
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010, Konami, for PlayStation Portable)
Pokémon Black and White (2010, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (2011, Nintendo, for Wii)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011, Bethesda Softworks, for Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3) - the first non-Japanese game to receive a perfect score.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 (2011, Square Enix, for Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3)

I'll always like XIII, a lot of people hated it for what it wasn't rather then what it was, a flawed but enjoyable game. The more I think about the story the more I like it.
I'll definitely be picking up it's sequel, it looks like everything that wasn't great about XIII has been improved.

Im looking forward to both XIII-2 and Versus, its just ashame at how long its taking for Versus to be released.
XIII was good but it wasn't amazing like Final Fantasy should be for me Lost Odyssey was a much better game with a better storyline and was more like what FFXIII should have been but that doesn't really surprise me since Hironobu Sakaguchi produced it

I agree here, I think the game would have been perfect if there was more areas like that small beach and if there was a real antagonist - both of those have been fixed in XIII-2, Caius seems awesome
I think i have accepted that the peak of Final Fantasy ( 1997-2002 ) has well and truly past now

I've been playing LO on and off for a while now, so far I think there's strong elements in it but a lot of it feels cliched, that being said what occurs after you meet Mack and Cooke is probably one of the most moving scenes I've played in a game.

The problem with XIII's story was that they focused on the character drama, which was done well except for Snow, at the expense of an overall plot. Lightning and Hope were great characters while Fang and Vanille were probably the most developed while Sazh wasn't overly important but he was likable.
The less said about Snow the better.
I don't think splitting the story into different chapters helps at all either
Scarlett.

I don't think it affected anything really.
I don't think it affected anything really.
it affected the whole game for me it made it seem a lot shorter because you realise that each chapter you complete the further in the game you progress where as in the older games you don't know where you are in the game
i really don't see the fascination Square Enix have with making things Mission based

^^ Those are pretty glorious tbh
Played through most of X recently... I like it, but I seethingly hate Tidus. -.- Other than him it's good set of characters, a few of them perhaps not utilized to their potential. I like the battle system and sphere grid though. Also it's actually very linear which I wasn't expecting. The storyline's okay I guess, but I appreciate that it's a different route from other Final Fantasy's.
I'm also playing VI at the moment, I haven't got very far (just got Gau) but I seriously do not remember it being a cheerful/comical as it is so far . Like with
Cyan's family getting killed by Kefka
he's seemed ridiculously ho-hum about it. I'm expecting it to get darker later on in the game. Also, although I like the fact there's so many characters so far they're all very underdeveloped, but again, I'm still not very far. I feel like I know very little about them and in terms of personality at the moment I couldn't really seperate Sabin from Locke, Celes from Terra etc. I've had Gau for like 15 minutes and I want him to just **** off.
Once I've finished both of these, I'm gonna get IV for DS. It's probably my favourite after IX.

How long has everyone been waiting for "Final Fantasy XV?" That's eight years of waiting, anticipating, and expecting since its initial production in 2006. And within those eight years, everyone is setting very high expectations of what the game will be like.
At E3 2014, fans anxiously anticipated the showing of the "Final Fantasy XV" preview and it did not disappoint. The human characters were sublime. They were hyper-realistic and no game right now could match it. However, that was all the info given at E3 since Square Enix didn't want to divulge any more details. What everyone knows is that the game is still being developed.
"Final Fantasy" fans are worried about the game, and they are really hoping that it will meet all their high expectations. On the other hand, Hajime Tabata, co-director of the game, has something else to worry about — the future of console gaming in Japan.
Japan's console market has not been doing well. In fact, it's down $1 billion from the mobile market, which is booming in Japan right now. Hence, this puts "Final Fantasy XV" on a pedestal together with hopes that it will revive the console market of Japan.
"Japanese market is shifting toward handheld or smartphone devices," Tabata told Kotaku. "It's pretty unique to Japan, where everyone is transporting—they have long train rides and bus rides to work, they have time to play handheld devices, or they're spending more time in their own rooms vs. spending more time in the living room."
Tabata also said that mobile games are more accessible, but it isn't something he is used to doing. Still, Tabata hopes that the dying console market in Japan will be revitalized by "Final Fantasy XV."
Sales of the first playstation were average before FFVII came out so hopefully there is a similar impact in Japan when FFVX comes out
