Why Were Ruth and Daniel Not Allowed To Sing Tonight?

During the clearly mimed version of 'Hero' tonight, how come Ruth and Daniel were not allowed to sing?

It WAS NOT due to a door malfunction, because it was mimed and their parts were sung by (suprise suprise) Laura and Austin.

But why????
so how come Austin and Laura knew they had to sing Ruth's and Daniels parts?????

I think it was a technical hitch, because when the were in a row of 4 in the middle, they all looked to the side, as if they were expecting them to come through.
