Charity single 'Hero' by the X Factor Finalists looks set to become one of the biggest-selling singles of the decade, according to sales figures.

The Mariah Carey cover is expected to sell more than 300,000 copies across the UK, with retailers struggling to keep up with the demand.

Speaking of its success, HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "This is proving to be one of the biggest single releases for years, if not the decade. Only Leona Lewis's debut hit 'A Moment Like This', which sold over 500,000 copies in its first week, can compare.

"It's selling more than most Christmas number ones would, and HMV has placed an urgent order for more copies. 'Hero' has sold over 100,000 copies in its first two days alone, and the only thing that may hold back sales this week is whether the manufacturers can keep pace with the growing demand for the CD single, although the option to download is always there."

The finalists performed the single on last Saturday's live show. Proceeds will be divided between the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal and Help For Heroes, a charity established to support wounded servicemen and women.

one of, not the biggest

Will Young sold over 1m in a week, so I think the pro-X Factor spin can stop. Yes, its doing well but stop trying to make out its better than it is (and the mention of Leona for that matter)

I'm really happy for the charity but the song doesn't deserve it.

Cos I like the song. I downloaded it to get the song and then now I want to buy it so I have a nice disc to look at and I feel better for giving more to charity in buying a disc. :cheer:
