Big Brother final pulls 9m viewers

Some nine million viewers watched Portuguese trans sexual Nadia Almada win this year’s Big Brother in the second highest-rated programme on Channel 4 this year.
The finale of the TV reality show aired on Friday night at 10pm and Channel 4 said yesterday that only the final episode of Friends with 9.6m viewers, was more popular.

Unofficial figures from the Broadcasters Audience Research Board show BB5’s final was watched by a peak of nine million – 48% of the audience share – as the 27-year-old Surrey bank clerk fended off the challenge of former air steward Jason Cowan to win with 3,863,696 votes.

Nadia had been the programme’s hottest ever favourite, with odds of 1-50 backing her claim on the title and the £63,500 prize.

Channel 4 said an average of 8.3m viewers (41% of the audience) watched the show, the highest-rated of the series.

The earlier 8.30pm show, in which Shell and Dan were ejected from the house, peaked at 6.8 million. Last year’s final – won by Orkney fish trader Cameron Stout – was watched by a peak of 7.8 million and an average of 6.6 million.

With her squawking voice and grating laugh, Nadia had seemed unlikely to endear herself to the British public, but she survived four evictions and won over the nation.

Throughout her time in the house, Nadia kept secret from her fellow housemates the fact she was born a man.

As the final result was announced, Nadia screamed “Oh my God” and began to shake. Seemingly in genuine shock, she left the Big Brother house flanked by fireworks.

With the crowd offering rapturous applause, she repeatedly mouthed: “Thank you, thank you.”
