Its nostalgia, which is what Christmas is about
Is it?
Personally I completley disagree, yes, it may pay a small part in the build up, but I see christmas as a time for getting together with people, old family and lost friends, having fun, and, although I am not religious, thinking about the birth of Jesus.

Pagan festival, Christian Fesival, Commercialism festival
Christmas is all about making memories, then the next Christmas you remember, think of something at Christmas that isnt about memories

Thats stupid, then you could say, think of something to do with Maths thats not memories, as anything you say is a memory in some way or another.
Having fun, being with people, celebrating 'Jesus's birth', its not about a bunch of TV adverts.

For some it may be, but not for the majority.

christmas is far too comercialised now compared to what it was when i was little although there is the story of jesus for most its now about how much is spent or how many gifts recieved i do think it is loosing its magic a bit (although i am doing my hardest to make christmas like what i had as a child for my daughter )
christmas for me isnt about meeting up with family and the like as i see mine throughout the year plus for me its also not about ending up bankrupt by buying tons of gifts (which is why i am homemaking token gifts this year) for me its all about the magic of the whole time of year not just the one day

A festive build up, a day when people try to gather together and have fun. Yes, giving away gifts, (And recieving ), Religion, and, of course, tradition.
Not just about Nostalgia or TV Advets
Nostalgia is part of the build up, I mean we can relate that to other things, not just Christmas. For example take something from the forum, say the Big Brother advertising campaign. If we didn't have eye flashes, house adverts and a countdown, we'd say it doesn't feel right.
But on another note about Christmas, its far too commercialised and IMO anyone who claims to be an atheist but celebrates Christmas is a hypocrite.

It is about:
Greed
Gluttony
Arguments
Drunkeness
More arguments
Tat passed of as something glamourous
Children fighting and bawling their eyes out
Having to fend of amourous advances from drunks
People loosing their life on the road, or their licence due to drunk driving
Elderly people being left on their own, thinking about all the friends they had who have now died.
We miss you ROB
I Hate Christmas
As for the religious stuff, there is no scriptural authority or command to celebrate Jesus birth
25 December was not decreed to be Jesus birth until 354 CE by the Bishop Liberius of Rome.
If I could I would prefer to celebrate Hannukah, which Christmas day falls slap bang in the middle.

Christmas for me is all about the kids, I start buying presents in early October because with 4 girls it gets pricey.
It takes a lot of planing but seeing their faces on Christmas morning makes it all worth it
