I din't know where to put this but I'll just put it in here.

Why is that you only seem to have 'music taste' if you like really old bands and artists or bands/artists who are not very well known. Well is your music taste bad if you like Britney Spears and don't like Duran Duran? It seems now that people see music taste pretentiously(big word-not sure if thats right).

Sure you should have varied music taste and listen to all sorts, mainstream and non-mainstream and all sorts all genres but I don't see why people who listen to the less uncharty music should get to call someone's else music taste bad.

Discuss.....

It works both ways, I've seen people who only seem to listen to mainstream/chart call lesser known acts bad. I'm on another music forum and there was a topic about the last.fm top acts of 2008? Everyone was calling MGMT, Foals, Hot Chip, Does It Offend You Yeah? etc crap, and when I asked why, they said 'because they flopped in the chart'.

That's what annoys me the most about chart music. There are so many people who SOLELY listen to it, and therefore the majority of really good music that doesn't have much hype/charts badly gets forgotten about. IMO, most of the top 10 nowadays is rubbish, and the better songs ARE the ones that flop. I feel like most music made by mainstream artists is just there TO chart.. like the artists don't care how the music sounds or how good it is as long as it gets them in that chart? Sure, I listen to some of the music I'd class under this category, but I'd never call it 'good music'.

Kelly Clarkson is THE perfect example. She released Breakaway, directed mostly by her record company and it was a worldwide success. She chose to take direction of My December, produced the music she wanted and it flopped, however, the music was some of the best she ever produced. Just because the music wasn't 'radio/chart-friendly', it didn't sell. One thing that really annoys me is artists who put nothing into their songs. Someone who turns up and just sings doesn't deserve anything IMO. If they've written some of the lyrics, all the lyrics, or even produced/created the whole song [like most bands do nowadays], then that's deserved. I'd feel absolutely crushed if I put all my heart into creating a song, for it to get beaten by someone who sung a few notes.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't call anyone's music taste bad unless mine was attacked, but I do have a strong opinion about music/artists nowadays, and I will say how I feel about the music/artists. People are gonna like what they like, I wouldn't say 'you can't like so and so cos it's crap'. Most of the time, on this forum, I'm in the minority, however off the forum, with my mates/bf/family, I'd be in the majority. It depends who you're around.

it anoys me my tastes are pretty ecletic to say the least and have had people pass comments over it
people like what they like its what makes us individual world would be a boring place if we all liked the same stuff
its just petty tbh theres no need but its more a judgement on the person doing it and just shows that they are in fact a tad shallow minded

I listen to all kinds of music and I like all genres. I like mainstream and I also like more obscure stuff. If I like a song, I like it. It doesn't matter if it's mainstream or not. Music is there to be enjoyed. Different people have different tastes and nobody should be slated for liking what they do.

Also I may add that I would not buy anything by a particular artist just because I like them. I am not a "fan" of anybody and if I don't like a song I won't buy it just because I like the artist.

I love you Laura. I've been meaning to post this. I'm fed up of people saying I have no taste in music because I like Britney, rather than an unknown band on Myspace or something. I can like however the hell I like. Ironically, I could say someone else has a bad taste in music but I don't because I accept everyone has different likes and dislikes.

i think you've got the Kelly Clarkson thing wrong.Breakaway was massive in the US - 6 million copies & 5 massive radio hits.when she returned with My December there was a huge hype.Never Again did good but the other singles flopped, not because it wasnt radio friendly, because people simply didnt like it - thats why the album failed to reach 1 million.
i agree though that people shouldnt base their opinion on a song by its chart position.

i have used the word "taste" in another post but my posts have included expressions of praise Leona Lewis and Jennifer Hudson along with "ecclectic" MGMT and Vampire Weekend!

If it's catchy or conceptual , yes please

At the end of the day people like what they like and nobody can change that, nobody can say you have a bad taste in music. You can't define bad music because its all based around opinion and not fact.

I think if people listen to music because they enjoy it and believe it is good rather than where it is in the chart or even if it's even in the chart, and people respect other people's tastes and everyone is all good!

If only.

No idea.

I ****ing hate classic rock and 80's bands, but people say I have no good taste in music. Wtf?

Oh, and if I insult the joke that is the rap genre, I get told that as well.

Some bitches don't know that people like different styles of music.

Scarlett.
