Don't fancy paying for Encarta or the like? Have a Linux box or Mac and all the Encyclopedia CDs are for Windows?
Don't fret! There is a free encyclopedia here just for you:
http://en.wikipedia.org
It is released under a GNU/GPL type license which means it is free, but not public domain. This means that if you use it to create another document etc., you have to release that under the same license!
You can even update it and add to it, but the people running it are notified of all changes and can revert / delete if someone does something naughty!
