DS Album Review:
It won't have escaped your attention that here at DS we're quite fond of Diana Vickers - and from the sales of her debut single 'Once', it's clear that we're not the only ones. Chucking out a one-off pop hit is one thing though, but sustaining that charm over the course of an album is quite another. The early signs were good - Vickers has famously taken plenty of time to get the talent and tunes together, assembling a supporting cast that includes Ellie Goulding, Lightspeed Champion (Dev Hynes), Nerina Pallot, Starsmith, Cathy Dennis and longtime Björk collaborator Guy Sigsworth. And guess what... the claw-handed girl from Blackburn with the Marmite™ voice has pulled it off.

Almost as if to prove that it's a proper pop album, Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree is frontloaded with the guitar-heavy slam of the Big Hit Single and a couple of likely follow-ups. 'Remake Me & You' out-pops the work of its co-author Ellie Goulding while sneakily nicking some of her edge. 'The Boy Who Murdered Love' is a lilting split song whose straight verses perfectly frame another massive chorus. With that voice clearly capable of conquering the whole electro-pop thing, a follow-up question is raised: Does it have what it takes for a proper weepie? The answer is 'Yes' on the fragile 'Four Leaf Clover' and epic-sounding, Pallot-penned 'Put It Back Together', but 'No', on the nice-but-generic 'Notice' and Hynes's stripped-back 'Me & You' - with those last two being the rare songs here that seem to lack a certain something.

However, there's fun and fizz in abundance elsewhere on the album. The brassy, hooky 'My Hip' still blows us away as much as the first time we laid ears on it, while a sparkling cover of The Sugarcubes' 'Hit' gives some modern gloss to Björk's former band's most commercial moment. Though it sadly excises Einar's gloriously uncool rap (maybe Vickers missed a trick by not roping in John & Edward to have a bash?), it should still inspire some of the new generation to delve into the back catalogue of Iceland's finest. Lyrically, the album is pretty one-note (being all about boyz 'n' breakups), but it still feels refreshingly honest. A line like "N.U.M.B. / I feel empty / Of feeling / Of feeling / Even God is grieving" might look completely absurd on paper, but in the listening, it just nails the tragicomic solipsism of depressed teenage heartbreak.

For all the sniffiness about RCA self-consciously trying to rebrand Vickers as a "credible" artist, the fact is that it's not just window-dressing. The average X Factor alumnus seeking serious success sticks to safe one-off shows and telly for a couple of years to build up the brand. Vickers has actually put the hours in on the road when it would have been so much easier (and less risky) to do a couple of chatshows and put her feet up. More importantly, she and her friends have crafted an album that's drenched in accessible pop melodies while never sacrificing the charm and personality that clawed us in from the start.

Some might argue she was overexposed [I'd certainly say she was, I've only really started to like her since Echo]

Diana however, has the issue of getting lost in the barrage of 'unique'/'quirky' females around atm, like Ellie Goulding, Florence + The Machine, Taylor Swift, Marina & The Diamonds, Ke$ha etc.

Plus she hasn't really had THAT much promotion, compared to JLS/Cheryl/Leona/Alex who all got X-Factor performances which has proven to boost sales, and their albums were all released later in the year [when albums tend to sell the most due to XF-promotion/Xmas]. Basically me and my friend went to her concert, waited for 8hrs straight and she came out of her car, and we were like "can we take a picture or get an autograph" there was only SIX people there and she was like "yeah sure just wait a moment till i put my bags and **** in" and we re like yay okay, getting rly excited and she didn't come back out. Not even as though it was close to the concert it was like 4pm, and she didnt even send someone out to apologise. Oh and she snuck out the back afterwards too.

It probably doesnt sound like a big deal, but when you're standing for 8hrs straight waiting to see someone you effectively Idolise and she comes out and ruins the entire illusion of her being this nice person etc when in reality she's a bint who has clearly forgotten who got her to where she is in the first place.

That was a bit unfair of her to do, but it can be difficult for musicians to get back out when they're inside. I've read loads of accounts of musicians saying they'll be back, but don't - usually put down to being busy/dragged around inside. There's a lot to do in four hours. They'll need to soundcheck to start with - that can take a good few hours. She's also probably got stuff she needs to discuss with staff/managers etc.
I don't get how you were waiting 8 hours though? That's mental. I'd be mad too... but then I wouldn't wait 8 hours LOL.

There was an incident similar at the venue I went to [Borderline, pre-album tour] where a bunch of her fans waited for her but she walked past them. She revealed on twitter that she had a friends & family waiting for her elsewhere and she was pretty much being pushed towards the car by security & staff, and everyone was shouting things at her so she wasn't too sure what was going on.

Perhaps tweet her? or post on one of the official DV forums? They're full of delusional children but they definitely know their stuff.

If she had sent someone out to say that she wasnt coming back it would have been fine, but there was a man standing and we asked when she was coming out and he said "she didn't mention anything about coming out", and it was just so annoying because she did it before at the Hamilton gig and she just seems really unlikeable to me now, which is sad cos I loved her <3 We had told her that we had waited so long and she was like oh yeah I'll come back out and stuff. I mean even the band and the support act came out and spoke to people, I don't see how she couldn't have, considering there were six people waiting, not as if it was a queue of a hundred.

I never really get people who let the artist as a person effect their opinion of them. Like I only support my favourite artists because I love their music and image and what they do. Christina Aguilera for example, I'm pretty sure is not really that nice of a person but it doesn't really phase me. Lily Allen is obviously a bit of a twat. I am quite surprised Diana did that but it doesn't change how I feel about her really.
