America is preparing to mark the third anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The names of the 2,749 people who died at the World Trade Centre will be read out by relatives during a ceremony at Ground Zero in New York.

The site's owners say they are suing Saudi Arabia for damages over the attacks because 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals.

The Port Authority of New York is to join in a lawsuit filed a week ago by Cantor Fitzgerald Securities, a bond trading firm that lost two-thirds of its workers in the trade centre attack.

Hundreds of British police officers are set to join mourners in New York, as officers from 47 forces form an honour guard for the families of those who died.

The 67 Britons who perished will be remembered at a separate service at the nearby British Memorial Garden.

There will also be ceremonies at the Pentagon, which was hit by a third aircraft, killing more than 100, and a field in Pennsylvania, where passengers forced terrorists to crash a hijacked airliner heading for Washington.

Meanwhile, radical Muslim group al-Muhajiroun says it plans to hold a conference in London to mark the hijackers' attacks.

Their convention, at an undisclosed location in London this afternoon, is apparently called "The choice is in your hands: either you're with the Muslims or with the Infidels".

It is reported to feature al Qaeda "surprises" and a previously-unreleased video.
